LOL.
Mycroft's wise and brilliant solution was a race. A virtual footrace to see which would get here first.
"Classic stuff," I thought.
"Ah, the elegant simplicity," I sighed.
And now it seems they are intent on breeding and creating their own new race. Get a room you two!

jwf, I think you misunderstand the situation.
Chris was first, asked a question and passed the baton to Aljiis.
The resulting question is too much for me, so I got stuck in a chat, waiting for someone with an answer and a new question.

Here's the question again so you don't have to go back too far.
Find the common denominator.
The superlative ex of an English antique rocker.
An ivory basher whose first was not a major.
The diminutive half of a duo whose dominant half once shared the same name as a midlands comic who you might find in the greengrocer's.
And they are all from over the water.
There are so many clues, I thought I had made it too easy.
Next clue: The second started tapping the ivories at the age of nine.

Oops made a boo boo
The ivory bashers second was not a major and the first lasted only 18 months. And the tapping started at 8. (Duff info sorry).

I don't know the answer to the actual question, but the midlands comic you might find in a greengrocers will be Jasper Carrott.

OK now work out how his name links to the duo. The duo's first real film was a musical with Gene Kelly.

Yay! I have it!

I've been searching high and searching low, through Gene Kelly, MGM, musicals, comic duos, prodigious composers and aging rockers, but the "Jasper" factor finally aced it.
Tom (from Tom and Jerry, which first appeared in 1939) was called Jasper in the first cartoon, alongside his diminutive nemesis, JERRY.
Composer JERRY Goldsmith started tinkling aged 9 and eventually went on to produce reams of classic film scores, his first being a B-Western (i.e. not a major success?) called Black Patch, which no-one but archivists remember.
Finally ex Rolling-Stone spouse JERRY Hall went all nudie for the first time recently, in the West End stage production of The Graduate.(Still not sure how she's superlative... was she the tallest model or something?)
Ah, I don't care. I got the booger. Now please excuse me, I have to go and have a little lie down somewhere
Yay! I have it!

Okey-cokey. Well I can see my pop trivia direction was just too damn easy for y'all, so I'll put away the Never Mind The Buzzcocks quiz cards and try something a bit trickier (I hope)
What links the following words:
Rocket
Bedsit
Autograph?
Yay! I have it!
Chris M Posted Jan 13, 2002
That would do it! But I can't let you get that point so easy...
It's more along the lines of Alji's. I should have said what name links them
The wrong answer
alji's Posted Jan 14, 2002
OK you had two out of three! Supermodel Jerry Hall and Jerry the mouse but you didn't get the third.

But you got the name which is what I asked for.
The piano player whose first wife lasted 18 months and his second was not a major (she was a minor and his cousin) was Jerry Lee Lewis.
So back to you.
