I suppose my best 'non-resolution' is to complain about the weather. One day is sunny and way up around 4C, the next morning is -22C. Snow that is more than half ice?

You'd think after 50-some years, I'd get used to it. Nope ...

Baron Grim

"There are British themed bars!?" - Pastey

Let me elucidate. The Bayview Duck is a Bar & Restaurant in Bayview Texas. The bartender is married to the owner's daughter. The Bartender is from Weymouth and his wife is originally from Arizona. They both previously worked at another restaurant/bar owned by her mother called The Hoagie Ranch, which specializes in hoagie style sandwiches. The mother saw an opportunity so she bought what would become The Bayview Duck and decorated it with everything she could find that seemed British to her, including various flags, a suit of armor, a canon, several stained glass pieces and all sorts of kitsch with an authentic Brit behind the bar.

Bayview, Texas is a quiet little community on Galveston Bay Southeast of Houston, not far from the Johnson Space Center. This was not the most obvious location to open a British themed bar/restaurant but somehow it has remained open for nearly 20 years now. A few others have opened in the general area but none have lasted for more than a couple of years. The Duck just barely gets by. But I like it so it's my "local". smiley - cheers

Me too, but that's maybe the good thing; if you like a post on h2g2, you actually reply!

Yes, the couple were posing as visitors. I have no details on just how they did it, or how they got rumbled, but it's vile.

If I ever get out to Texas, and it is something I'd like to do, then I'll definitely have to visit it!

Are you still on lockdown, Lil? I wonder if you could persuade them to steal the cook?

On the resolution thing: I don't remember the last time I made a resolution for the new year. I was never one for doing so.

Mol - on the new tablet

I forgot to let you know how the beef-in-beer went down. Osh was eating it - cautiously, but he was eating it - and then DH said 'Well I think your 21st century twist on medieval stew is really delicious.'

At which point Osh laid down his fork, said 'This is stew, isn't it?' and was mighty put out. But he'd already started eating it so he was obliged to at least carry on eating the bits he liked (ie the meat and the carrots).

I had it again last night as there was just me to feed and it had matured really nicely.

Mol

Such a difference a name makes - with some folks and food. Sometimes, I am quite happy to not know what I have until I am done. If it was good for me, then no problem trying again. Reguardless of components.

Well, you raised an interesting point about the dark side of stories and characters for children. Does Peewee Herman count as being in that category? Not because of his escapades in real life, but because the environment on the set of his teevee show was... strange. Mickey Mouse club it wasn't.

Lil: I think you might be misinterpreting what I was talking about. I was describing "dark" characters, such as Shadow the Hedgehog, who are nevertheless age-appropriate for preteen audiences, and that's perfectly okay.

It's been decades since I encountered anything to do with Peewee Herman, but it seems like Peewee's Playhouse would be more along the lines of ... the sort of thing C.S. Lewis was talking about when he said, "A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest."
