let me guess the reason for the development of the BMI descriptor is yet another reason to feel like we aren't good enough. Insurance? (now i'll read the article to see if i'm right)

This afternoon, I combed kitties at the shelter for 2 hours. At first one hour was enough to give all the kitties who wanted combing all the grooming they wanted. Demand has since doubled.

I just calculated my BMI for the first time ever...wooooOOOOooooo.
Don't mind me--I'll be the one sitting quietly in the corner and fasting for several months.

My Dad had a story which justified any intelligent subordination and made any jobs-worthery indefensible.
Dad (as a very young Army officer): ... but it's in King's Regulations Sir
The Colonel: King's Regulations is for the guidance of the wise and for slavish obedience by fools, and I won't have fools in my regiment
BMI comes into that same category; I think it's useful guidance, but it is only two metrics and it ignores all the other factors which make you more or less fit and healthy.
Incidentally, being fit and being healthy are two entirely different things.

Turns out there are two four o'clocks too
I know BMI isn't a perfect way of measuring healthy weight but I'm inside what is normally considered the healthy range so was hoping for some words of congratulations. Grrr! I know I am both fit and healthy and had my %body fat and %lean tissue measured at my gym - back in february (when I was only about 21 lb heavier) I was 36% lard and now I am 26% lard - for my age that puts me in the healthy range and this is a far better measure than something that doesn't take into account of your composition. Mind you, my BMI was 45 at the start of my diet and no doubting that I was very unhealthy then.
Due to be hot hot hot today. t'Other was up half the night and has a new cold so I am now in two minds as to whether to take him swimming today while t'Boy has his lesson. On the one hand he will be horribly hot in the viewing gallery and would be much cooler in the water, on the other hand they are exposed to all kinds of bugs in the pool and his immune system is already working hard.
How are the legs Lil? Any more improvements?

Hope you're not too crumpled after that flight, Santra.
BMI certainly does need to be taken with a good pinch of salt. My daughter, the sports physiologist, gets beaten up with her BMI every time she visits the doctor. Yes, she's overweight - but a ****load of that weight is muscle. Looking at BMI alone, most rugby players look bad.
Given the huge amount of exercise you do, Kelli, I'd imagine there's a lot of muscle skewing your measurement too. You've done brilliantly well!
Watched a programme last night in which there was a ten year old girl with a BMI of over 51. Now that was worrying.

My mum had a super-pouty fit last weekend when she asked what I weighed now - and it was the same as her. She tried on a load of my dresses for a do she has coming up but they were all too small, she didn't get why at the same weight and height I am much smaller (2 dress sizes) than her - basiclly more of me is muscle so I'm more dense

1 kilo of muscle tissue will take up less space than 1 kilo of fat tissue - hence the somewhat faulty expression 'muscles weigh less than fat'.

Morning.
Interesting article you linked to there HN. Still it doesn't explain why if a lot of people think that the BMI is crude mathematical junk we carry on using it. With modern body analysers you can get a much better hold on things such as %fat etc. When taken with assessments on where that fat is then you can have a much better predictor of health and any problems that you might be storing up.
Still I know I've probably got a fair bit of fat in the wrong place and should do something about it.

As I said on the 'other' place...
From the results section:
Using your weight of 144 kilograms and your height of 63 centimeters, we calculated your body mass index (BMI) to be 25.4.
Impressive. For a midget of 2ft and some 300 lbs, I've got a pretty healthy BMI.
I think the BMI is about right. But I'd rather be as dense as kelli!

minichessemouse - Ahoy there me barnacle! Posted Jul 9, 2010
Yukky weather out there!
Rainy wet and damp, no cycling today, but at least my bike will get a wash.
Now i have to decide whether to potter around my flat for a bit and hope it drys up, or whether to wander back down to the flat of S and crew. Came up to check my mail, nothing interesting, which is a shame really.
BMI is a load of cobblers. I tend to lay somewhere between 8 and 9 stone and am 163 ish cm tall. I have no idea how much of me is muscle or fat or anything. I just try to eat right and make sure I at least get a walk every day.
