It's hard to think that here in our peacefull little land that there have been many battles and invasions. The small valley we live in has the remains of a roman fort on one side and a supposed british encampment on the other.

Not long ago, my wife and I visited the UK. There and in Wales, we saw the remains of some castles and fortifications. (A685217 ... my pic) Yet to see them today, it's hard to imagine the noise, bedlam and general horror that their history holds.

There is still plenty of evidence of who was where in the language and placenames in these isles. All those places that are -ham or -ton or -ing and those that are -by or -thwaite or -thorpe. The streams, brooks, becks and avons which run over falls and forces. The chapels, churches and kirks.
The people may be long gone but there is plenty of evidence they were around.

Magwitch - My name is Mags and I am funky. Posted Mar 13, 2010
FG, I was merely in need of a good nights sleep.
Good to see you back Rev, I hope you can stay for longer this time.
Had a very funny conversation with a bloke from Stockport Council yesterday. Apparently, my cellar is *not* a cellar - it's a sub floor area* and I should not be using it It poses a danger, as we could fall through it and sue the council . The man was a total fool. If the fire brigade needed to come into my home, they might need access, but he wants the workmen to put a temporary seal on it. He's a twit, and he aint gonna stop us using it.
*apparently by his definition of cellar it has to have a window. According to Websters a cellar is defined as; 'A room or rooms under a building, and usually below the surface of the ground, where provisions and other stores are kept.' If it's below ground, where would one put a window? @rse!

A cellar with a view ? anti logic , one of the things to get right up my goat. Just tell the council guy that "This aggresion will not stand man"
The big Lebowski, one of my favourite films . The dude abides.

Plenty of cellars round here with windows. Still, I fail to see that that makes them any safer. The windows are generally small and often barred so hardly an emergency escape route.

Morning all. Going to hang out with C at an arcade today.

How do you fall through a subfloor? Isn't it, um, the basement? Is there anywhere else to go?

fg, that may be why the man is a twit. I get the whole 'you need an escape route' but are you sleeping down in the cellar? Probably not. And if you are, it's safer than upper stories, because oh, yeah, heat *rises*.

FG, the sub floor is actually the floor material that lies beneath the carpet/tile/hardwood.

Yes, GDZ, but that's not what Mags said.

" where would one put a window? @rse!"
that's where the bloke needs a window put. Then he can be enlightened.

Now I'm confusedÉdoes he think you need to fill in your cellar? Or is there a floor below it, Mags?

The cellar issue sounds very confusing - I'm sure there must be something more to the council side of the story that hasn't been communicated to you. Surely?
When Midnight Strikes is now over. But now it's show week for The Pajama Game. I have this morning to shift gears before we start doing all the technical stuff. Second performance much better than the first, even though I ended up without a mic at all for technical reasons - I was told that all of my lines could still be heard, though. Hurrah! The show's composer came down to see it, and said some lovely things afterwards and the audience reaction was great.
