I think you should do something about that legally, Irv. It's a crime!

surely that's an indictable offence. Murder of the french language (or is it latin?) either way, its a crime.

I wonder if 'crimes passionels' also cover crimes made in affect due to not having smiley - coffee? I could relate to that smiley - winkeye

Voir dire would appear to be old French.

Titania - I got that from Hati's journal. No idea what those books are. Hopefully I can get them from another direction.

I'd pay the air fare, but unfortunately I just recently bought a round trip ticket to Portland, OR.

Thanks for the photo, minismiley - mouse
You have a pretty face.
I agree it would be good to have an entry on Peter's Anomaly smiley - ok

On the topic of eyes - got my new varifocals today. They're fine - apart from making the room swim, giving me a headache - and making me look like Anne Robinson.

Did anyone see this yesterday? Apparently Meh was chosen for inclusion in the 30th Anniversary edition of Collins English Dictionary.

Methinks we really do need a Meh smiley.

i thought it was french, but so many legal terms are latin, i thought it could be either. (tho it seems way more frenchish than latinish.)

Yeah, I've always assumed voir dire to be French, since I can pick out the french roots.

A bit of googling reveals that voir dire is Old French for 'Speak the truth'.
I'd assumed it meant something along the lines of look and say.

Loads of info here - http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/voir+dire

Nice photo Msmiley - mouse.

Have some sympathy and some useful antiemetics Ag. smiley - hug for Lil as well.

My smiley - nurse in clinic asked what I was looking forward to about going home - I said just cleaning, cooking dinner, and watching TV. Sadly a novelty.

I've always read it as look and say, too, based on my high school french. No matter what my profs said about it having something to do with "truth."

After all, it's the process by which attorneys and the judge get their first *look* at the prospective jury pool, and listen to what these prospective jurors *say* to determine whether they would make good jurors. The process has little to do with truth, but is instead a contest to see who is the best at getting out of jury duty. And a contest between the attorneys to weed out anyone who might have strong opinions on the case.

This, of course, often leaves a panel of 9 to 12 unopinionated retired people (because they have no interest in getting out of jury duty).

The wise attorney speaks loudly, and explains things clearly.

remember that 'see and say' toy thinger? turn the arrow thing, pull the string, and it says what the arrow's pointing to? that's what voir dire reminds me of

I'd like to second the motion for a meh smiley! It's a neologism which I find surprisingly useful. If a sound, rather than a "real word" can count as a neologism, that is.

I've only been called once for jury duty. It wasn't greatly convenient at the time because No3 was a fairly small baby. In the event, my socio-economic status wasn't what they wanted.
Mr T has been excused jury duty ever again because the case he sat on was so gory. He was elected foreman of the jury by his peers because he was the only one of them wearing a suit.

I have issues with 'meh' being added. It's not really a word, so much as a sound. At least to my way of thinking.

'voir dire' could come from latin via french, as 'veredico' means truth-saying...

Well, I finally got through and registered my unemployment claim. It's done with debit cards now, the dole! None of that standing in line stuff any more. And I just report in on Sundays, via a website.

The last time I registered as unemployed was for a period of two weeks in 1988, and that DID involve standing in line...

Is there any surgical recourse for Peter's Anomaly?
