kelli - ran 2 miles a day for 2012, aiming for the same for 2013 Posted Jun 29, 2008
Morning all
I have a question for the American salonistas. Next week I begin a run of 6-8 weeks acting as the NCT postnatal supporter for a group of ladies who will be having their babies between now and the end of August. They have been doing their antenatal classes together but these have now finished and my role is to provide a venue for them to meet while different people disappear at different times to have their babies - once they are all mummies they tend to organise their own get-togethers. The usual thing is to lay on some tea or cold drinks (depending on the weather!) and cakes or biscuits.
Anyhow, the first meeting is on friday and I noticed that there were a couple of americans in the group so would like to give them something appropriate for the date - are there any suggestions for something I could provide that is simple to make but recognisably 'Murkin?
Right, The Boy is having a nap - he has been up since five (as has his mummy, so think I'm going to go for a nap too

Um, I'm pretty sure the last time I was in England, there were Oreos at Tesco's. Very American. And no effort at all.
But making something "really" american? Well, geez. With the exception of going to McDonald's and getting burgers, is there any food besides Jello that's "American"? Huh. I'm gonna say no.

Oh, so there isn't anything traditionally associated with the 4th of July?

Fireworks, bad beer and more fireworks are the traditional Independence Day devices.

[mags] avoiding the Doctor Who thread because she's not watched it yet.

Since you can't have the beer'n'fireworks option, kelli - how about stars and stripes and a red, white and blue theme. A few wee flags and some coloured paper napkins?
We need Hyp's expertise here, I think.

[Ag - has case study to finish, is reading the minutes of about seventeen different meetings so she can be sure who said what about which when, wishes to institute mandatory 'being able to write coherently' tests for all job applicants where writing minutes will be an issue].

The main foodstuff I recall from Hyp's fourth of July was potatoes. Being launched skywards by burning hydrocarbons.

What about apple pie? As in "It's as American as apple pie"?
FG, if I didn't have a kid to look after, I'd be angling to go on that trip, too.

This will be my final rant (on this subject anyway) please feel free to ignore it.
Went yesterday to 'carve up' Mil's jewellery. Didn't take it all because some of it was unknown to the Vampires (and those buggars don't deserve it). About two sentences were spoken to hubby by his sister and brother in law. The jewellery was divided (I acquired some rather nice bangles,) and the others took the 'choice' pieces. Hubby got his birthday present off said sister - it was a jumper! I've never seen him wear a jumper in all the years I've known him (over 20). WTF???
Well, that's the last *ever* time we will see them again. Thank the goddess! Don't let the door hit you where the doorknob should have bit you!.
In other news, I got rather wet earlier. Sunshine and showers, well what else do we expect in England? Wimbledon fortnight, Gastonbury weekend?
Matina, can you find me a clean cup for the please?

Hypatia Posted Jun 29, 2008
Mags. At least it is wrapped in yesterday's paper and in the bin.
Kelli, the traditional food for my family's July 4th picnics (other families will do different things - plain old hot dogs and hamburgers cooked outside on a grill, potato salad, baked beans, watermelon and home made ice cream. That is present every year. Sometimes we add fried chicken. I always take a dessert of some kind besides. Blackberry cobbler is a favorite. Last year I baked a cake and decorated it like a flag with blueberries for the stars and strawberries for the stripes. This year I'm making peach pies.
Oh. We "used" to have macaroni and cheese. But the cousin who always made it is now feuding with the rest of us.

Ho yus, Hyp. I've had no time for them since Lorna was 'kicked out' of hospital a couple of years back. Me and A spent a whole week looking after her. I had a rant at his sister, asking for help. Her reply? 'If you didn't think you could cope why didn't you turn her to Social Services?' That's your ing mum you're talking about!

Some people just aren't worth the effort, Mags, and your SIL sounds like one of those.
I'm designated driving a bunch of bartenders to San Diego today. So not looking forward to it...
