Eyes the wee knitted socks along with Teuchter. Whispers "Wasn't that excellent? I wonder if there are going to be any extras of those? I wonder if there is a recipe anywhere?"

Lentilla (Keeper of Non-Sequiturs) Posted Dec 10, 2007
God bless Charlie Knotts, the man who invented beer, beer, beer, tiddly, beer beer beer, tiddly, beer beer beer, tiddly beer... und so weiter.
[Lentilla surreptitiously looks up how to spell surreptitiously (not really ) and hangs a star at the top of the tree... It's the Death Star, and it looms ominously, rather like a small moon.]
We've got the decorating urge, but this year I want to do an all Star-Wars themed Christmas. For the Nativity scene, Darth Vader as Joseph, Princess Leia as Mary, and R2D2 as little baby Jesus. Miscellaneous Jedi with lightsabers can pose as shepherds in the back, and those little musician guys from the cantina can be the three Wise Men. And for the Christmas tree... The Death Star at the top of the tree, and twinkling white lights, with little Star Wars ships and battlecruisers hanging from every branch.
Happy birthday, d'E! It sucks to have a b-day so close to Xmas, doesn't it? Mine is in January, after everybody has run out of money and gift ideas.

Yes, that's right. I won a raffle. First prize, even. 50 $50 gift certificates to restaurants all within a few miles of my home. The raffle was billed as dinner out every week for a year. They weren't kidding.
I never won anything valuable like this before. I hope you all won't mind if I take these back after the holidays.
Happy birthday, d'E!

Boy WM, are you lucky! I never win anything like that. I'm sure you'll enjoy all that dining out. Hope all the restaurants are great.

Is it OK to hang more than one ornament? If it is, I think I'll add a lighthouse, since Crescent City has 2, one of which is on a postage stamp.

Agapanthus Posted Dec 11, 2007
Happy Birthday d'E! Here is a Proper Birthday Present, wrapped in proper birthday gift-wrap, and totally utterly separate from anything Christmassy at all.
Irv - sorry, I may have rather Bounced on your perfectly reasonable suggestion. I didn't mean to sound ungracious. You are quite right that many many libraries use Library of Congress and very sensible to suggest it as a sensible alternative to Dewey. (It's just, I am up to my eyeballs in coursework at the Guild of Librarians and have officially Lost All Sense of Proportion, especially when it comes to LoC, whose 'manual' is twenty-odd volumes of lists. Rant - I'd give my other eye-tooth to ensure I didn't have to read it ever again).
Congratters on the 50 dinners! What a wonderful prize!
I have Nearly Finished my last piece of coursework, which means of course that the last 500 words will take until dawn and the formatting will nearly kill me - my very cute share-ware not-microsoft-word thing is colossally annoying when it comes to bullet points. Colossally. I can't tell you how many ferociously rude emails I have written to the developers and then carefully deleted.
*Hopes Hyp is OK, what with her ice-storm*
Ummm. I have no idea why I am mucking about in here instead of finishing my homework. It's nearly 1 am in Nodnol and I am as promised utterly wired on caffeine and adrenaline.

Irving Washington Posted Dec 11, 2007
Agapanthus, I didn't take any offense. In my lifetime my mother, a librarian, has only ever worked at a public library and a community college library. So Dewey and LoC are the first two that pop into my head -- especially since for most of my last 3 years I've done research primarily online. Is there a special term for the way law libraries are organized? It's going to be something obvious, isn't it?

Agapanthus Posted Dec 11, 2007
Irv, as far as I can tell, every Law Library says 'the hell with it' and invents their own classification scheme. I have heard a few use Moys, but I have no idea how Moys works. I may have an idea by Easter. It involves a lot of Ks.
*Muffled screams as the Guild of Librarians SWAT team abseil in through the terrace doors, grab Agapanthus, and are briskly winched back into their helicopter. Well, she did say they'd come and get her if she didn't hush up about classification and finish her coursework.*

Sounds rather dangerous to me, what with helicopters and all.

Montana Redhead (now with letters) Posted Dec 11, 2007
Moys must be a subset of LoC, then, since the LoC classification for law books is in the Ks (I'm currently looking at the development of canon law...can you tell?).

Happy Birthday, d'E
My 'puter is dying. It is a pity royal blue is my favourite colour. I had occasion to curse it rather commonly yesterday So today I have to go buy a new one and think I might just go the route of lapdog, complete with pretty bag for it to hang its head out of while I do my shopping
Ah the trials of Life.
