Ew!

Good point. Just look for the person with a lot of scratches on their face and an extreme fear of cats...
> I am surrounded by people who use lousy grammar and have started doing the same
Know whatcha mean, Hyp - it's a pain, innit?
> I usually peel garlic by putting it on a board, placing the flat of the kitchen knife on top of it and giving it a gentle but firm WHACK
Same here. Except I use a very big cleaver and a large heavy board - and as Ag mentioned, keep the blade horizontal - or better yet, make sure the sharp bits are pointed toward the board just a bit. But when the head of garlic has a whole bunch of those little cloves in it, that's a lot of whacking.
Once I toasted the garlic head in the toaster oven with a bit of olive oil... And then smeared the roasted garlic on fresh toast. Now *that* was good. And garlicky...

Well done Marv
I got home via a different but nearby town. The train service I would have got turned round and went back to the main station after about a mile. After that everything was cancelled. I managed to get a delayed and shortend service (ie it was only going two stops and then terminating) and a lift home. We did go past some people walking home from the nearby town that I recognised as faces I see on the train to work in the morning so I guess the trains were still screwy then.
At least over here it's not as bad as in Yorkshire.

Congratulations, Marv!
I've actually been cold all day - danged weather. Up until a few days ago I was feeling quite pleased with all the rain, as we've had summer droughts for the past few years and our water reserves were getting low - yes, I know, in Blighty, Land of the Falling Rain. But today's bout of floods and disaster is just horrible.

The weather is indeed mad at the moment, even by Blighty standards.
Hyp, we have indeed taken photos. Not all that spectacular, really, but still...

for Marv - that's excellent news.
And my tooth has (practically) stopped hurting, so the loobrush clearly did the job, hurrah.
I use garlic salt. Quarter of a teaspoon is equivalent to one clove of garlic. Otherwise we just end up with garlic growing in the fridge.
Tonight's guide cookout was, for the first time ever, conducted in non-stop pouring rain with winds approaching gale force. Our kitchen floor is going to need one heck of a mopping. But at least my little ladies may remember to bring their waterproofs next time

Yay for no more toothache! Worst pain in the world, truly miserable. I once read that in one African tribe a toothache was considered a justification for suicide.

I grew up eating garlic in practically every meal. There is no way garlic could possibly get to the sprouty stage in my fridge. Doesn't seem to stop me catching colds every year though. I feel I have been Lied To by all those happy hippy articles in sunday colour supplements that cheerfully extol the rhinovirus-preventing properties of garlic. Either that or I have the immune defenses of a girt big WUSS. I say this because the persistant rain seems to have got into my left sinus.
S and I have spent a jolly hour or so discussing politics. We do this from time to time, it's a family trait (though we usually avoid the traditional plate-slinging and door-slamming that occurs when person A invariably takes opposing view to person B for sole reason that they are RELATED to B). And I know that when I go into work tomorrow I shan't dare mention it when the usual elevenses telly chat happens. For I shall be shunned as a witch is shunned and possibly ducked in the horse-pond again, and that weed is very difficult to wash out of cotton. But politics is not boring, is it? Is it? FOr the record, we were discussing the differences between right-wing attitudes towards State interference versus left-wing ones, and coming to the conclusion both sides disapprove of state interference on some things and approve of it for others and the only real difference is the one side approves and disapproves the exact reverse of the other. And then we decided to vote Liberal Democrat and brushed our teeth.

simulpost. The "quite rightly" was in response to Hyp's remark about toothache as justification for suicide.

Well done Marv
yes suicide for toothache sufferers..that make the dentists think about emergency services...crush the garlic....always plant a couple of the cloves of unused ones then snip the growing sprouty bits for salads and such..or just to chew on as I pass by them

Huzzah for Marv!
> For I shall be shunned as a witch is shunned and possibly ducked in the horse-pond again, and that weed is very difficult to wash out of cotton
Look on the bright side... If you drown, then you're not a witch and will therefore not burn in hell.
Living in Texas, my opinions are often regarded as heretical, licentious, and at times libelous. So I only open my mouth when I know it won't get me in trouble. (At home, with the doors shut, and with nobody around.) (Of course, that's not true - I'm in trouble all the time. I'm used to it by now.)
I didn't realize you could eat the green sprouty bits from the top of the garlic clove. I always cut those off and throw them away.
> that make the dentists think about emergency service
Sputter... don't listen, Teuchter!
