David, please keep us updated about LibrarianPear's condition. And give her my best. I'm sending healing vibes as best I can. Also sending images of an extinguished fire and an intact Observatory westward.
Back to work for me today. I really need to be independently wealthy so I can retire. Any of you know of any fabulous sums of unattached money that would like to come live with me? No? Didn't think so.
The foot is better. I'm hoping the swelling doesn't hang on for ages like last time. And Molly is back, looking slightly po'd but none the worse for wear. Molly also started out at the library. She's the kitty that was trapped in the attic during a snowstorm the winter before we started our renovation. Anyway, she learned "the look" and uses it on me frequently.
It's raining again this morning. Over 7 inches in the last 12 days. My back yard is turning into a swamp.

FG Posted May 9, 2007
When I visited the Bay Area in March, we had dinner at Spenger's Fish House in Berkeley one night. After the luscious, luscious dinner we went for a stroll around the neighborhood. Someone had a night-blooming jasmine in a big pot next to their front door, and you could smell it for a block because it was in full bloom. It was absolutely heavenly. It was one of the many things that made me realize how much I miss California.

I second that about the smell of Jasmine on a summers evening, reminds me of holidays in Tunisia.
.
I went out today to try out my new long lens and camera, there was a coot there and they have prehistoric feet, very weird!
.
Also there is what must be the prettiest duck in the world, the Mandarin duck, it is almost unreal and orange, blue and assorted colours, with an orange beird and strange wing tips....if you get a chance look at a picture, truely a fantastic looking duck!

The Dissertating's done, now for the revising....
It's grey here at the moment, and we're suddenly remembering what rain looks like. Ah well, I'll just imagine I'm back in Venice, and make a celebratory Spritz <>

Hyp - you wouldn't want to send some of your surplus rain our way, perhaps? We finally got some of the wet stuff on Ban Collie Day Monday but the ground could really do with a right good soaking.
Glad to hear LibrarianPear's out of hospital
Lilacs and Daphne odorata are two of my favourite natural pongs - and I'm very partial to Lily-of-the-Valley too. Even the sinister wisteria smells quite nice.

*Carefully arranges large vase of white lilac on one of the coffee tables.*
all round. It seems to have been that kind of week.
I'm glad LibrarianPear is out of the hospital. Fingers crossed it was nothing serious.
Here in Nodnol, it is cool and windy and drizzling. Horizontally, of course. Horizontal drizzle is a London Particular, like pea-soupers used to be.
I had something of a book-fanatic's epiphany at work today. We usually get our books and journals bound by Noodles and Co, and have done for years. I looked upon the merely glued bindings, crepe-paper linings, and annoyingly snap-shut-immediately covers, as a hazard of the enormous expense of binding and something up with which we'd have to put until we were all zillionaires. But recently Noodles have been making so many mistakes we thought we'd see if we could move our business to Smartypants Bros. Smartypants Bros can do a bind for the same price with CALICO linings, stitched bindings, and sewn rather than glued endpapers. I nearly snogged Mr Smartypants, and had to be restrained from licking the sample books he'd bought with him. As it was, I spent the entire meeting opening them, watching them STAY open, closing them, opening them again, and sticking my pinkie down the spine hollow so I could feel the calico. Mmmmmmm, properly bound books.
The which revelations will make no sense at all to any of you, but, boy, was I close to happily exploding unless I told someone.

Seriously - isn't it great when someone does something well? And books are such tactile objects anyway.

We have both wisteria and honeysuckle. Honeysuckle is my favorite--hands down, but the wisteria is more showy--and really, really invasive! It does smell nice though.
The only way we can grow jasmine here is in a pot--to be taken inside during the winter months.
Good vibes to all who need them.
