Canterbury missed the snow.
And I missed kelli's birthday and the cheesecake. Belated good wishes from the Library of Doom!
I find the fact that the scary Nancy Pearl action figure now comes with a book trolley really disturbing. At least the red outfit makes her look a bit less like Harry Potter in drag!
I have been sorting out my finances, and now have a glimmer of a possibility of getting on the housing ladder.

Arrrgh, just managed to lose a massive long post. The basic gist was to say thanks for all my presents and to comment on the sprinkling of snow we had here.
Lots of good housing-ladder news for everyone

I'm feeling a bit tired right now-possibly having a late afternoon seminar in a warm room didn't help, but they are interesting seminars.
Thankfully mortgages are a little way off-I'm going to have enough fun paying my rent this term, as well as the loan to help pay last term's rent.... gratefully recived.

Ugh. I'm still at home and sick. I'll avoid discussing the details, so none of you have to tiptoe around me and my rumbling belly.

FG, I'm sending tummy-calming thoughts your way! I know *exactly* how you feel.
D is gone on her adventure, and I really don't know what to do with myself. Although I think I'm going to enjoy leaving my house at 4 this afternoon and not worrying about having to pick her up...

Lentilla, I've actually got a tin of those "Bacon Strips" bandages...and I've used them. As for the other offering from Archie McPhee, I don't think I've EVER had one of those...

Can you imagine the double-takes you'd get from other people if the bandage was in a visible place?

Happy belated, kelli!
Argh, I had something I was going to say, but backlog drowned it out. And it was even something I'd thought of at non-computer-handy times, too, that I'd been waiting for an opening for
This post may get kind of long, because I'm offline at the moment, so I can give Tom the 'come home' phone call so he can gracefully leave the visiting after the midweek study His mobile just rang a few times before it shunted me to voicemail, though, so he's either currently talking on it, or else in the blank spot in the trees on the way home.
Trees! That reminded me! Z, if you don't have any ideas on where to (possibly) emigrate to, this area is gorgeous, and, from what I've been told, has a climate quite similar to southern England, so that wouldn't be a huge physical shock. There's a horrid doctor shortage here (OK, so there's shortages all over the place, but it's not like I'm going to recruit for *other* places...) I seem to remember you saying that you enjoyed baby-catching? Well, there's ONE OB in this entire county. The scenery, like I said, is gorgeous, but I do have to be honest and say that, if 'culture' is important... Well, let's just say that that's one reason doctors don't seem to stay here. *sigh*
And of course the fact that I'm known for trying to get h2g2ers to visit has nothing to do with anything

" Owning a home together can be very stressful, but it's also a lot of fun. "
Speaking of which, how is the volcanic decor with added Easter Island statues coming along, Lentilla?
Kelli, hope the BDay was the best, and that spud enjoyed it, too! *g'wan, it's virtual and virtually your birthday*

[Flight ticket planning and getting is done - I'll be travelling from Monday to Friday the week after. General warnings now issued for the Netherlands, Australia & North Borneo for this period]
Ahem. We now return to the normal programme
A bit wintery here, too -6°C / 21F this morning, right now it's blue skies and sun over snowy ground (thin layer, yes - but it looks like winter is supposed to look!)

Was the site down for maintenance again last night? Conversation is really getting killed -- I don't know about anyone else, but I continue to suffer from the mysterious missing-posts-no-refresh problem, and even changing skins every couple of days does no good any more. I have lost faith as to whether I really know what everyone has said before I post.
In re the recent discussion about medical practise, there's a fascinating article in the most recent New Yorker (by a doctor) about heuristics in the art of diagnosis. This fellow has been examining what leads doctors to make mistakes in their initial diagnoses, particularly in the emergency room, where the patient is most often a complete stranger.

Amy - I am not totally insane - I have no intention of praticesing OBGYN in the US - the indeminity insurance is $250000 a year! which is about as much as a senior OBGYN makes here.
South Africa may have a very high risk of being shot, and an even higher risk of getting HIV frmo a needlestick injury but frankly it seems preferable to being OBGYNE in the US.
As with any place the shortage is of trained doctors, not half trained ones - and I'm definatley in the half trained catagory. I don't have the experience to take over the Medical Officer role at a remote hospital which is what Doctors without Borders, and VSO are looking for. I can't even work for free.
*sulk*
Anyway I've decided that SA is the place to get lots of experience very quickly, certainly enough experience to go to decent volentry work/mission hospital work. Or failing that Ships Doctoring which is a good way of being paid to go on cruises.

I have not experienced any of the refreshing problems some of you are dealing with. You would think that if it was location related, I would have the same problems as d'E, but that is not the case.

I'll be tucking in my veggie champion of the pudding race, neeps and tatties later on. Yum
