Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am... Posted Jan 23, 2007
We complete on Friday and start moving on Saturday... well, I say 'we' but I'll be in Coventry this weekend. Mrs. D has given me a "Get out of moving" card as the trip to Cov had been arrange before we got the completion date.

Thanks for the good wishes, everyone. Mother has two problems. She fell on the ice - nothing is broken thank goodness, but she is in a lot of pain from arthritis and bruises. She can barely walk from one room to another. Plus, she has a serious kidney infection. Anyway, she doesn't want to be at my house, and I'd rather not have her here, so neither one of us is particularly happy. For the two of us to actually live together would be miserable. We are coping as best we can, both being terribly polite and sweet and waiting for normalcy to return.
Mr. D., I can't believe you are leaving the moving to Mrs.D. I don't know whether to congratulate you on your scheduling or smack you. Truthfully, I always wished I could move without anyone underfoot, putting things where I don't want them and piling boxes in the spot I just cleaned up. But physically, I can't manage a move on my own. I always wished I could move one room at a time and get it completely set up before doing the next room. Movers don't work that way. And of course moving hundreds of miles makes a big difference.
For my retirement move I am tempted to pack a few personal things with sentimental value and just get rid of the rest of the lot. Start from scratch, so to speak.
Carrot cake with passion fruit butter cream icing? Ag, that should cheer both of us up.
Good luck with the ouse hunting, Zomnker.

kelli, you buy the plane ticket and I'm there!
Hyp, remember to breathe!
Wait...did we miss kelli's birthday?!

I'm wearing polartec sweats over my jeans and three layers of shirts and vests and sweaters on my upper half. It's bitter cold out there, and not so warm in the house, either.
Extremely unusual for us to have "snow on snow" the way we had this week, what with us being high desert, technically.
Hypatia, that sucks, losing your privacy like that. Let's hope she heals soon.
Did you ever set up climateprediction on the library servers?
Moving from Florida to New Mexico with no house to move into at the end of the journey, now that was the second-biggest cull of my life. The biggest was when I left England in order to take care of mom; I went from a full household to three suitcases, a guitar and a steamer trunk of books and records.

Well, she has said she'd probably get more done without me there! I do have an unfortunate tendancy to pile boxes in the most inconvenient places and then not know what to do when I realise that there's 5 boxes of stuff right where we need to unpack the 10 boxes sat in front.

Happy Birthday Kelli
Being a student I have to move a lot of stuff annually-it's worse than when I could only leave a little bit in my first year though, as it can accumulate.
It's cold but dry here.
Hyp, hope your mother gets better soon and you don't feel too crowded

So, perhaps the Dutch are gaining on the US as a country of too much disposable income, not enough common sense to know when consumerism is running amok?

I didn't realise this was birthday cheesecake! Happy birthday, Kelli
This is a portable hole. You can put it anywhere you want to lie face down -- the beach, the bed, or the yoga mat. It will stretch to accomodate the spud.

This is just prime. Lends a whole new meaning to "man's best friend." Can't you just see it?

Well, I made it into work for just over a hour before I had come back home. The amateur physicians who double as my coworkers diagnosed me as having "intestinal flu" because I have all the symptoms of said malaise. The cure? Time! Fluids! Rest! Daytime TV! Hootoo!

Kelli's birthday? And I missed it? Blast.

I know! Carefuly hand-dyed and hand-knitted Work Mittens - in that you pop them on, they realise what work you want done, and then THEY do it while you put your feet up. To anyone peering over at your desk, you will appear to be concentrating deeply on something very important and busy, and, crucially, they won't bother you unless its to offer tea, cake, biscuits, or to do any errands you'd rather not give up your lunch hour for. Plus the mittens are very warm and soft, with adorable bud-and-flower motifs in your favourite colours.
Here in London we are waiting for snow. It is cold, well, I say cold, clearly it is quite mild, nay, sultry, compared to what some of you are enduring, but after out bizarre Winter of Extended Autumn (after the Autumn of Extended Summer), freezing point is quite cold enough for me. And it might snow. Well, snizzle. Possibly sleet. Briefly. And no doubt, nevertheless, every train in London will grind to a whining halt and getting to work tomorrow morning will turn into a three day saga of a trip involving Bactrian camels and possibly sherpas. Because we British are pathetic, yea, verily pathetic, when it comes to any weather more challenging than 15 C and mildly overcast with a slight breeze.
I'm trying to avoid having good whinge about how I'm not very well, and my local hospital is not very useful - I am trying to adopt a Sunny Demeanor in preparation for The Interview, and I'm not THAT ill, only it's annoying and boring, and anyway, the entire universe is still so squeamish that it'd rather I discussed diarrhoea than the functioning (or not) of *eek!* female-specific anatomy. You may now rinse your eyes with Bactine and go about your business. I am being Sunny. And Chirpy. And quite possibly even more immensely annoying than when I whinge.
Tulips! My tulips are flowering! And they're called 'Shakespeare'!
