Corn. Sure, fresh corn if you can get it *really* fresh is much sweeter and tastier, but it rapidly looses all that flavor as it sits on the shelf so that unless you live near a farm you end up eating something that tastes much like paste. But canned corn always has that lovely metallic zing to it.
Ahem. Keep in mind that I can't eat corn and haven't tasted the stuff in several years.
Lyrics are no different that poems, not in the slightest. Of course it depends on how you define "poetry" but too often the definition comes down to poetry being "intellectual" and lyrics not. Good lyrics make fine poems. But in most songs, the music is primary so we often get stuck with really lousy lyrics, and as noted once set to music it can be difficult to "hear" the poem without the melody, even when it's a good poem.
Personally I can't think of "Howl" without hearing a daft They Might Be Giants melody. It destroys the poem.

That's a good question. There are some vegetables that, as Lentilla says, have a completely different flavor when canned. Better to ask what vegetable do you absolutely HATE when canned. For me, the answer to that is peas. I loathe mushy peas.

(wandering in with a distracted air) This is all very confusing. Was shoo'd out at the end of a broomstick and have been wandering the corriders ever since looking for the right thread - rather like a minotaur-chaser. Didn't recognise the place at first, it was all so sparkly, shiny new. (Stops in horror) Oh! What happened to my lilac chenille beanbag cover?
(Recovers but pointedly avoids the bean bag). Poetry/Song lyrics? I think Hey Mr Tambourine Man is wonderful poetry: 'jingle-jangle morning' so aptly sums up so many of my own. Besides, the poor man sings like a gutted crow so I think of his work as badly-sung poetry anyway.

I think this is the latest I have ever come into a thread since I joined the Atelier.

Yes well, and instead of getting backed into trying to answer a political history question I couldn't I should have told them all about Russian rock history. Apparently, very big on lyrics is the Russian rock tradition. Far more so than the music side of things. I mean, the music is good, well performed and all that, but not innovative. But no self respecting Russian rock artist is satisfied with less than proper attention paid to the lyrics.
It's a shame I don't appreciate them, both because I don't care about the words to songs and because my Russian isn't up to it even if I did.

But then there's those songs that the music absolutely sucks, but the lyrics are just brilliant...The Monkee's "Pleasant Valley Sunday" comes to mind. Rather pointed, that one.
FG said show up and say more than "Yo" so I am. Can't say that I'll be around much, though, what with grading and giving finals (and can I just say that 3 days to grade all my finals really burns my toast!)...oh, yeah, and that whole parenting thing.
Hati, I called my mother and apologized for all the times she told me to watch my tone of voice and I had no idea what she was talking about. Now I do. My most often overused phrase these days? "Did you mean to sound like that?" and "If you knew, you'd be doing it, wouldn't you?". I think a convent sounds about right at this point...

MR - nice to see you back!
13/20 on the Athens quiz - yet again, it's the names that cause me trouble...
Memorable moment from the past thread: Lentilla's zombie cake, with maggots crawling all over it! I showed it to a colleague, and it made her lose her appetite just before lunch time, it did...

Mushy peas? I didn't know Americans had mushy peas. Or do you mean tinned Marrowfat type peas? They are vile. *Proper* mushy peas, however, are a vital part of fish and chips.

Sol, I'm sorry the interview was so highly unsatisfactory. It sounds to me like they were interviewing for the wrong things - I mean, why would you need to have all the knowledge at your fingertips right then and there if you know perfectly well how to research it and more importantly, teach other people how to find it? I have been taught in my time by some highly informed and encyclopaedic people who were utterly utterly unable to convey one seventeenth of the subject they were supposed to be teaching and had all the charisma of a catering urn into the bargain. But anyway. Focus on the fact you didn't really care for them, either. The Job of Loveliness will come to you.
As a woman who was tormented by horrible canned veg at boarding school (where you can't run away home and eat something decent in the evenings), I can't bring myself to touch the stuff. Oh, OK, apart form tinned tomatoes. And chickpeas. Otherwise it's all vile. Oh, and bamboo shoots and water chestnuts. Other than THOSE, it's all vile. Especially tinned mushrooms *makes involuntary retching noise*
One of my bestest friends has just split up with his girlfriend, as far as I can tell sensibly, with no huge waves of loathing, and he sees her point and everything, but still, ow ow ow ow ow ow. She was a lovely girl, too. Which doubly sucks. I must dig out my Good Listener hat and Gloves of Compassion.
I do so hate seeing people I care for unhappy (as if most people vaguely enjoyed it. Honestly, Ag, talk sense for five minutes together).

I did vaguely wonder whether Sol came down to the University of Doom for her interview, and whether I should feel bad about my employers being mean and silly if she did. Then I considered saying something ill-advised about the University, so I didn't say anything. I do hope a better training provider can be found for you, Sol.

So it's an entire University of Doom now? That's a tall order, and you have tough competition. Does your university electrocute students for failing to show their ID cards?
