Now there is a yearly festival up in the Sierras, a town called North Fork in California -- the Logger's Jamboree. That was worth going to. There were contests: cross cut saw, axe throw, chopping through a log, chain sawing through a log, etc etc. Watching people throw a double bitted axe at a target from 30 feet (10 m) awya was pretty amazing. There was log birling also. The jamboree did not have separate entries for men and women, women competed right alongside the men since the things being tested were skill rather than strength. The booths were very good too, lots of jewelry and cool clothing. At the end of the weekend there was a dance with live music. That was a festival worth going to.

I clicked the link for the sore-back photo, and got this message instead. I thought it was pretty funny.
"The file you're looking for doesn't exsist or has been moved. Or, maybe the other files just didn't like that one and they all ganged up on it and harassed it until it left. That would be sad. Anyway, it's not here."
> This does mean, however, that I have just used the miscarriage as an excuse for getting out of a ticking off for something that _was_ rather unprofesional.
While I can understand why you don't want to use the miscarriage as a way of pushing people around, it's still pretty traumatic, and your boss was being quite insensitive. So I wouldn't worry about it too much!
I've just spent the weekend displaying my artwork to the huddled masses... Two galleries, one bike shop, and my favorite pub. Phew! Lot of work, and it's not the fun kind of work where I get to sit and be artistic, but the hard work where I have to talk to people. But the wine is free and plentiful, so now I have a white wine and a stiff neck. And dirty feet. (I can only stand in high heels for so long.)

Hi dgbibulli
Lovely weekend bracketed by queueueueueueueueueues on the roads there and back.
The cats have eaten all their dried food, and have disappeared, so I am feeling a little twitchy. On the other hand it's just a few days after the , so they are probably out killing mice.
Came across a proper brass band playing in a bandstand in the park we picked for our picnic. I love that kind of serendipity.

Still no actual cats, though soemone has eaten some of the food I put out last night. They sleep in my bedroom at night though, so I'd have expected paws across the face or some other form of acknowlegement I was back.
I am very very tired this morning, not particularly suprisingly.

It does have to be said, Lentilla, that I wouldn't have been crying if the dratted woman hadn't made me so upset that I hadn't stopped all night. Blast her. To be fair, I don't think she meant it quite as crassly as it came across, and part of her problem is that she runs the business as though it's a sort of family affair, even unto the assumption that we will work all the hours sent happily for damn all pay.
I am a bit horrifed by the backwards attitude displayed by the British workplace towards pregnant women though. Thank god for legislation. for kelli. You hang in there girl.
I think an 'at home' is a nice idea. Or a shower for that matter. You'd have to make somekind of 'no presents' statement about it though. We watch too many American shows not to know what's expected...
Anyway, meant also to say - nice tattoos there, Marv. Striking but austere. I forget if this is true, but I don't seem to remember colour in any of your designs. Any particular reason for this?

Welcome, dgbibulli!
About shpwers, I don't know that I've ever been to one where the gifts were expensive (except the one we threw for a girl in the office who got KU on her honeymoon, and was completely unprepared financially for parenthood -- the office chipped in and got her an infant car seat and a stroller).
Mostly, it's just diapers, a bath basin, things like that. Hardly a major haul...

There was a brass band at the village fair, one from a local school, quite good as well. Later on in th pub (the we're shutting for a bit, drink us dry disco) the DJ stopped playing records and a few members of a local brass band started playing

Kelli - It's true that most people I know with kids didn't have baby showers, and I remember one of my friends assuming that "shower" was as in showing the baby to people and pronounced it accordingly.
A graduate trainee scheme has caught my eye, but it would mean moving to Amsterdam. Does anyone know what Amsterdam is like (do we have any Dutch Salonistas?), particularly in terms of cost and how easily I could get by when the only Dutch I currently know is "stroopwafel"?

No idea about cost, but the language barrier won't be a problem as the Dutch (like most countries in Europe) learn English from a very early age... although I'd suggest at least learning a few basic phrases out of politeness.

I'm just working on my 'feigning enthusiasm for another Monday' routine. While two mince about, looking for a special morning treat. Life is normal.
