What do you mean "failed lurker"? I thought I was one of the best!

Anyway, I'll be even more hidden than usual. Exam results day next week which is always busy for staff and means the start of thinking about going back for the new term.

Also I've found (yet) another house and since the current owners are emigrating, this time it should be straightforward and all done by the end of September. It's a modern cottage in a medieval village with all that goes with living in a place like that. (smiley - jester is the closest we get to a Morris Dancer or Town Crier smiley.) This will be the 4th house we've lived in over the past 12 months although it wasn't my intention to pack and move on 3 times in the same year.

Off to see Pirates smiley - pirate tomorrow with Sunshine and Moonlight (my teenage daughters) then to see T3 with Mina on Saturday and I'm looking forward to the girls night out on the 27th.

Asteroid Lil - Offstage Presence

So I drove to Las Cruces on Tuesday afternoon, stopping in Alamogordo for some paperbacks, and arrived in time to hand over the car at the service place before it closed. They wouldn't give me a loaner car so I had to stay at a place with a restaurant, and the only one of those within shuttle range was a Holiday Inn.

The food was awful! The plumbing and a/c were noisy! The next morning the shuttle didn't pick me up till nearly 11, which ruined any chance of going to old Mesilla with my cards, so I sat in the waiting area and read the second of my 3 novels, the first having been finished the night before. I should have taken my laptop.

The car was ready at 2:30 so, after stopping to visit briefly with a colleague at the Ranch & Farm Museum, I headed north up 70, in not too bad a mood. I stopped at an Applebee's in Alamogordo for an early dinner and my first decent meal in two days, then carried on up 70.

I was between Tularosa and Mescalero when I realised that my engine light had come on again! smiley - steamsmiley - grrsmiley - wah And I haven't been able to contact them yet to complain.

On the plus side I have discovered a new author named Gregory Maguire, new to me I mean. I read Lost the night I was in the hotel, and am now reading Wicked, the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Well done for the mega post Ben, that's quite an achievement, yup you will get to meet Aeschlepius, on Friday

Titiania, - always glad to be of use, I'm accessing h2g2 the normal way at the moment

MR enjoy all that reading it sounds fascinating to me, I would love ot have done history.

I've got a presentation to prepare for Friday afternoon on a topic I wrote an essay on in June. So far we have some good clip art and nice animations. I've lost the details of how long I'm supposed to talk for and I'm just hoping that they have powerpoint facilities. I think that they do. Though I might pop into the library in the morning to make some back up OHP slides.

I've had a dreadful time with the white screen of doom (or whatever you call it) for the past two days. And timing out before any conversations would open. Sort of takes the pleasure out of the website.

Nice to have you back Ben.

Caer, I have had two Siamese cats over the years. The first was an absolute joy but very fragile healthwise. The second was the stupidist creature ever born and also unhealthy. I prefer tabby cats. They're sweet, smart and healthy.

Am currently drinking warmed over coffee while a fresh pot brews. I have no shame.

I am on the mailing list of our local theatre and have just opened the events booklet and the pantomime this year is Dick Whittington. It doesn't seem five minutes since I was last in a panto audience

Ben, I'm not sure if you will see the new car on the 27th as I may ask No2 son to drop me off, depending on what we end up doing and where.

Oh! There There Ben!

Caerwynn, I have to go and buy some wholemean flour before I can give that bread a go, but will report back

It's still lovely here, the thermometer says 26C but outside is too hot for me.

Cheers for the link, Z it certainly seems better. Trouble is, if we all go and use that, will it fall over too?

I have been on the look out for pools nearby, and have found a very reasonable council run pool around 10mins walk away, so may be off for a swim this afternoon.

This is my local baths, but the membership is a bit difficult to justify at the moment.

You had to have seen Lady and the Tramp, Caer, that's where Si and Am the two nasty Siamese appear!

"We are Siamese if you please,
we are Siamese if you don't please,
we are from the residence of Siam,
there are no finer cats than I am!"

Or at least that's how I remember the song going. I don't recall any notably mean cats in 101 Dalmatians. I've never seen all of Bambi because when I saw it, back when I was 5 or so, I burst into tears and had a major crying fit and had to be carried out of the theater. I have yet to watch the entire movie because I'm a big fat sap. I cry every time I see Dumbo and his mama, imprisoned in the wagon, rocks him to sleep with her trunk while singing "Baby Mine".

My anti social angelfish got killed by the other fish today, the tank is too quite without him. The other are looking quite lost and wondering where he's got to. Silly things. I've turned the heater off in there tank and it's one degree C over the recommended level. Even my tropical fish are too hot.

I've been for a drink with a girl I hadn't seen since I was 16, I have changed a lot since of course, she seemed to have as well. She was a very religous polish catholic five years ago, now she's lightening up a lot since. We've resolved to keep in touch, I may be visiting her in Krackow soon, Birmingham seems so inadequate in comparason.

Good luck with the swimming Toc, I have resolved to go to the gym on my way home from my new placement on Monday, when the membership expires in Novemeber I'm joining the one at the university it's time I got the courage to go swimming, I haven't done since - erm, well since you know what I mean.

Garius Lupis, I think refering to Aeschlepius as A would be a good idea, because then I can refer to my flat as A+Zs and I can't spell Aeschlepius,

We got talking to the upstairs neighbour today, A is bass trombone player, and has been too nervous to practice in a flat since we moved it. It turns out the neighbour's a French Horn player, and he's thinking of joining her brass band. Fortunatly I like brass band music.

I'm sure the nasty simese were in Lady and the Tramp. Yoda, (Terri's cat) is a Simese, she's lovely but tends to murder small things a lot apparently.

I am also the historian, but that's pretty much what I expected, since that's what I am.

The song goes:

We are Siamese if you please
We are Siamese if you don't please
We are looking all around your domicile
If we like we stay for maybe quite a while

Do you see that thing swimming round and round?
Maybe we could reach on in and make it drown

Okay, that's all I can remember. I will have to borrow my kid's copy of it to get the rest. I mean, if anyone really wants us to.

Z! That post was really rather wide. Tsk!

There was a town meeting tonight, concerning improving our zoning ordinance. All the strange people came, including the fundie who said "The Board is an Evil in the Valley!" I know wish to be known as Asteroid Lil, E.V.

I was also actually threatened by one of the premier right-wingers in the district. With a wink and a smile he told me that he had acquired all my records for the past 3 years and sent them up to his attorney in Albuquerque, "who will know what to do with them." smiley - huh Does it really matter to him how colors of liquitex paint I've been buying? On this if nothing else I have a transparent conscience... but I do respond rather badly to being threatened.

*sigh* It will take a while to calm down after that. I think I'll go off and read my New Yorker magazine.

Well, it turns out the Uni has a whole service dedicated to sending you details of your former course, so panic was needless. I'm terribly impressed. Also, Dad has tracked down all my certs except my A level ones, and I guess the boards for those are not so hard to track down. I'm sure the chool remembers which boards we were doing, for example.

Trouble is, when I last looked into the fee/funding thing sometime last year, it seemed as though I hadn't been eligible since 2000, so I sort of forgot about it.

Catch 22: if they don't pay I have to stay out of the country to save money. If I stay out of the country, they don't pay.

Still it's only a problem if they reclassify me as an overseas student, which is what I really failed to check up on, as I refuse to pay that much. And if I find out I could have salvaged the situation somehow, I shall kick myself. But then that's my fault for not checking it properly last year.

Overall though, it appears I am doing this the wrong way round. What a foolish person, to think that going off and making damn sure this is what I want to do in life and working hard to get good at it was the thing to do. No. I should have done it straight out of Uni, realised I hated the idea of working in an ordinary school, and THEN left the country, where I would treat my profession as a joke, or teach the pampered children of diplomats in some British/American school like half the other teachers here.

Anyway. I'm sure I will work something out.

Dad is madly rushing around regardless of ribs. He's even cycling again. He says it only hurts if you make him laugh.

The thing to do, Lil, is obviously to do the same to this chap. And hope for (pay) dirt.

salt?" asked another cook.

Sol, I know what you mean. If only I had gone to grad school straight out of undergrad, but no. I had to get married and have a kid. Oops. Oh, well, it makes it fun.
