Just finished the book. smiley - erm My family had originally planned to read it aloud to each other, one chapter at a time. We read the first chapter the day the book came out, then never got around to continuing. Finally, we let our daughter read it, then it was my turn (my wife is next).

I found the book very good, but not in the same league as the first few books. It only managed to "hook" me during the climax at the Ministry. The rest of the book seemed to just trickle along and I didn't feel compelled to keep reading. Mind you, I still enjoyed it a lot and was happy to have more revealed, but now I just want things to get moving. I suppose part of the problem is that it is one book of a series, so the amount of story advancement in one book can't be too large.

The earlier books (first 2, at least), had full plot cycles within them, which made the books more exciting. With regards to the larger plot, they were basically "Voldemort tries to come back, Harry thwarts him". Now that Voldemort is back, the larger plot is "Voldemort vs. Harry" and it will take 3 books to resolve it. This book didn't advance the larger plot very much. Basically, Voldemort spent a year underground trying to get a prophecy, an aim which Harry eventually thwarts. So, what were the members of the Order of the Phoenix doing during that year?

I'm still only half way through it - reading it in eBook format on the computer on work, so I'm a bit slower than normal - and am so far not entirely drawn in. I tend to agree, GL, that the first few were much better at entrapping one. Still, its not bad so far. smiley - biggrin

I have books on my Palm, handy for waiting around when you have no access to reading material.

I enjoyed HP and the OftP, but it wasn't as unputdownable as the earlier ones and somehow didn't spin the same web of magic around me.
