No, I remember something about the Potter family being one of the oldest families in the wizard world, who fell out with the Malfoys and their ilk over Voldemort. And Harry's mum was a Muggle like Hermione. The money thing...well, maybe Aurors got paid well, or a bounty or something. Or maybe his dad was, like Sirius, the last of the line before Harry. Notice that in OOTP, the vision Harry has is that his father is hanging out with Draco Malfoy...that implies a bit of moneyed family.

Returns to her normal state of mind and then adds:
I don't think Harry's parents'll be Aurors - i think there's something more to voldemort picking harry as the likely tool of his demise than just that he wasn't a pure-blooded wizard - like that harry's parents, or one of them, had some sort of special job that made voldemort think that harry would naturally be more powerful than neville...
plus i think there's a lot more to come about harry's mother - notice they always mention how he has her eyes? like that's a tell-tale sign for something...and i think harry's aunt knows what it is because i've always found her hatred of her sister to be rather...overdone...especially considering that she seemed to care enough about harry's wellbeing to take him in in the first place - so i think her dislike of the magical world has something to do with some specific event with her sister...although i dunno what...

Perhaps she threw Tom Riddle over for James Potter, and his bitterness made him transform himself into the evil wizard Voldemort?

Wrong timescale - Voldemort is about a generation older than the Potters.

I think Harry's aunt was secretly in love with his Dad. Unrequited love made her bitter and jealous of her sister, but she took Harry in as he was part of James.
I think I shall have to read the book again as I can't remember if the content of Dumbledore's letter to Harry's aunt was revealed in the book.

That's a good theory.
I don't think it was a letter that Dumbledore wrote. I think it was more of a Charm-type situation. JKR doesn't explain it particularly well, which means there's probably mroe story hidden there.

No, the note that he gave her when he left Harry. He "reminded" her of it, and she stopped trying to throw Harry out. My book is on its way to Korea with the STBX...anyone have it handy?

Yeah, I just don't remember a note being mentioned. It was more of a vage 'promise' type thing.

Sorry to jump in but I'm sure it was an actual owl-delivered letter to Mrs. Dursley? maybe I've missed something....hmmmm!
Just thought I'd add my little bit of HP knowledge!
Nice to know I'm not the only one who enjoys discussing HP issues! Refreshing!

Yes, _that_ was a howler.
I was thinking more in terms of the original promise that Dumbledore made her keep.

I wonder how long we shall have to wait for the next book, it will be the penultimate one won't it?

I could see JKR doing a post school harry book. Possibly finally killing voldemort in that one. Maybe Harry will become a prof at hogwarts and the stories could continue with other characters or Harry's kids.
