tacsatduck. I also think that Harry should grow up a bit. This book was a bit angsty to me.

I don't know...childrens books usualy play on very basic emotions..it shouldn't be to far feched that childrens books are very capable of bringing out things...I guess I would have to give Redwall as an example...I often find myslelf feeling for charactors in that series

I am not so sure that childrens' books play on simple emotions. A lot of them *do* play on simple morality. In fact one of the things that I dislike about Lord of the Rings is the simplistic nature of the morality involved.
Snape is interesting because he so deeply unattractive, but apparently good. Harry's father has become more interesting for the same reason.
What are the generations here. Could Voldemort be Harry's Grandfather, rather than his father? A lot is made of the point that Harry looks very like his father.

I would find it pretty hard to except that harry and he who should only be named once and while are related...

I confess that I spent most of book five waiting (with dread) for the "I'm your father, Luke" scene.

'duck and Marv - do you honestly believe that you weren't that angsty at the age of 15? I think it's quite a clever portrayal of a difficult time of life, myself.

The sons were both angsty between 15 and 17. In fact Harry Enfield's Kevin character is a good portrayal.
Also kids hate being left in the dark about stuff and Harry going off the deep end at not being told the 'full' story (there is obviously more to come) is fairly typical.
No1 son has nearly finished and I'm looking forward to hearing his views. As an English JH graduate,he is far more perceptive about literature than I am.

Master B, Yup. I was dealing with some fairly serious problems when I was that age and did not have time to be all that angsty. As a result of it, I don't appreciate it when others behave that way. I also don't relate all that well to it in books.

But there's scientific evidence that teens brains are hardwired for melodrama. So really, Harry's just behaving like a normal 15 year old boy. Come on, the scene in the tea shoppe? The internal dialogue about holding hands, or not holding hands, was brilliant!

I don't blame Rowling for writing Harry as an angst ridden teen, but I also don't consider shouting at friends all teh time as a sign of normal teen angst. However, when one considers the stress of beign Harry added to the stress of being a teen I don't blame him. In fact I think that it was a good thing that Dumberdore did not make Harry a prefect, thought someone else in the class may have been better suited than Ron...

Actually, I agree, now that I come to think of it. When I was 15/16, I only got into tempers on the odd occasion (though I'd really get quite mad in them). I did not, however, have a general habit of shouting at all my friends for no readily apparent reason.
