I am attempting to wake up sans caffeine right now. I think that I have way too much of that chemical in my system at the moment. I hardly sleep, and it is never restfull. Any ideas on caffeine-free wake up methods?

I always find that a shower helps me wake up. The hardest part is just getting out of bed, everything else rolls downhill from there.

Just got back from my meeting with the school officials...a whole roomful of folk, it seems. But it went surprisingly well, and they won't be holding my daughter back. In fact, the school shrink said she is exhibiting high school age behavior, which is why (duh) the typical system for behavior they use in first grade doesn't work.
They also said she's a control freak, and as FG can attest, that's inherited.
But they're working on a plan to help her, including no more new teachers. So hopefully things will get better. They said much of her academic downfall is not that she can't do the work, but that she won't. I could have told them THAT.

You need something to look forward to when you wake up, Marv. I find one of the best times to read is early in the morning, so I get up a half-hour earlier than I really need to so that I can read for half an hour before leaving for work. When the alarm goes off and I feel like rolling over and sleeping for a while longer, I think about how nice my morning read is and I get up.
And I gave up cafeine a couple of years ago. Magically, the headaches I used to get a few times a week, just went away (after the week-long withdrawl headache had its way with me )
I got 10/16 on the art quiz and I'm Ned Flanders.

I'm cutting back on caffeine, but I don't tend to drink much else. Must try harder.
Well, I called the chap I interviewed with last week, but he's too busy to have made a decision so I don't know yet. On the plus side one of the other breweries I wrote to have called and they might need someone, but it does sound more of a temporary position. Oh well, we shall see.
MR, I hope the school continues to be understanding.

Bloody hell, it looks like we are all nervous about (un)employment. The second day temping was massively better than the first, they actually gave me stuff to do, and I took a couple of tech-books with me (UML, not coding) to read if I had spare time, which I didn't.
What is frustrating me at the moment is that the agents won't even put your CV forward unless you phone them straight off the bat; and it isn't always easy to be the first person to call. But never mind. Everything changes - eventually.
The weather is too nice to be stressed, and I have the tickets booked to see my PL, so there will be getting no sense out of me for a week!

Anyone on the left coast of the puddle know anything about the RTP area of North Carolina? I might start looking for a job there soon.

Wow, MR, it sounds as if those folks actually have your daughter's best interests as their priority. I'm impressed.

I've just come back from the car auctions. Carbon monoxide and cigarette smoke. It clear the tubes. The prices are holding up ok so I think I'll sell the antmobile that way.

RTP area, Marv? The Raleigh area? I have some relatives by marriage that live in North Carolina. It gets very hot, very muggy and then they have terrific storms in October and November. But I guess you knew that. There is a lot of trash along the highways--everyone and their dog likes to toss stuff out the windows while they're driving. Its flat with a lot of piney woods. Also, you hear a *lot* of New Yawk and New Joisey accents in Dixie.
I'm with Courtesy--a good long shower in the morning does wonders for waking up.

I was hoping someone would say something about a good single malt in the mrning.

A good single malt in the morning gives me a bleedin' headache, actually... Alcohol has an adverse effect on this researcher. I quite liked that coffee flavored stuff you, Lanny, and Gwen took me to go get when I was in SLC. As for non-caffinated wakeup, I don't usually drink coffee during debate tournaments. Instead I drink large, large quantities of fruit juice when I can get it. Your brain needs sugar to function, and fructose gives you a more mild boost than sucrose (the stuff in soda and candy), but it lasts longer, and doesn't cause the significant drop in blood sugar after the boost is over that candy sugar does. Lil (and anyone else who's interested), you might want to see this. The IIEM is learning to talk back at the Cafe http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/F26140?thread=244668

Oh, and before I forget, on the subject of burnout:
I don't do coding, but I'm going into law. I give myself 20 years after I get the degree before I burn out, maximum. And that's if I get to spend time doing what I WANT to do, and not just paying off student loans from law school.

Irv, what you had was that micro-breweries Kona Stout. It is one of my most favourite beers on the planet.

Hmmm, Stout,
Well, tickle me puce and call me Kenneth if I haven't managed to be here two nights on the trot and thus read the backlog. For getting up I also recommend a good shower, and then a bit of a walk. I find that gets the blood circulating and feeds the oxygen to my brain. I always feel more awake after a light walk.
