I haven't seen or read Adaptation/Orchid Thief, but I want to. I did see X2 a few days ago. For an action movie it was surprisingly good, much better than most action movies.

*wanders in from her apartments*
Good morning everyone. I think I'll get some tea and head over to the conservatory to see what Amy's been up to.
Did you notice how the bots wouldn't move the linen closet? They prefer for rifts to be in enclosed spaces.
Hypatia, what's the best way to line up free-standing stacks in the library, or should we only have shelves lining the walls?

I wish they'd brick up the linen closet. I've wandered in there too many times during the middle of the night and have ended up sleeping in the crisper next to some celery and soggy lettuce.

After a horrible mishap last summer on the beach I haven't wandered anywhere in the Atelier or on its grounds.

Lil, if there is enough room, it's better to have the books on the walls. The light is better that way. And it has a more traditional feel. Otherwise, you'll need double-faced stacks for strength. They need to be at least 3' apart. And I recommend using some suspended lighting rather than the modern ceiling pannels, which glare and leave dark spots.
Please, don't use 72" stacks! They make libraries look like warehouses. I have some stacks that are only 42" tall and use them as room dividers. They aren't tall enough to create dark spots and I use the tops for displays of magazines, pottery, flowers, etc. They are normally used in children's areas, but work well in adult areas also.
For anything valuable, you'll need barrister cases with locks and for things that are also old you'll need some humidity control. Two computers - one holding your catalog and the other for online and CD-Rom databases. I would recommend leather furniture, but if the pets are to be allowed in they might damage the leather with their claws. And since the library won't be used by large numbers of salonistas at one time two tables and a corner with comfy seating for 6 should be adequate. Wing chairs, if you're going for a traditional look. And of course a desk for the librarian.
I prefer tile floors, but carpet does cut down on noise. Marble is too cold and if you're not careful you'll get them too highly polished and someone will go flying. Trust me on this one. People shrieking and crashing into the walls sort of puts you off of your reading.

I always loved my library when I was a kid, but I liked the tall shelves because it made it something of a labyrinth. When I got older, I really liked the Minneapolis libary. It was very light and airy.
Courtesy, no sweat. Some other time, perhaps?
Off to grade 40+ essays. I really wonder...when did they stop teaching kids how to write?!

MR - definitely. Will you be working through the summer?

The new Main library in SLC is very well lit with lots of natural light from the windows. It is quite pleasant, if a little "plastic".

*wanders into the Computer Tech lab, borrows Number 11 and goes into the new library area, then comes back to the salon*
Hypatia, Number 11 agrees that stacks around the walls would be the best plan because with such high ceilings he can put up a spiral staircase and a balcony walk. He thinks there should be a central desk facing the windows with a terminal on it, and you can train a bot up to run the information desk, but he reckons all the computers on this floor will be tied together when the team have finished. So anybody should be able to access the catalogue.
Hey that reminds me, I should ask Marv about wireless access.
Hypatia, my favourite library furnitre is those tables with the slant surfaces and individual lights. Could we have them?
Oh, and Number 11 said he wants a word with you about the Jasper Fforde rift and where it might best be sited.
Apparently the linen closet rift is a rogue, Sporks, but the one in the crisper is just Affi's little joke. We don't want to brick up the linen closet, do we? You never know when we need to get out of the crisper drawer! I don't even dare lock it. And Chloe loves it in there. And where would I put all the guest room linens and towels and all the cleaning stuff?

Hmm, let me get the specs on wireless and I will have it implemented.

As long as we don't interfere with bot comms... I know the boys downstairs are totally shielded, but we don't want to scramble their brains when they're up here. Or Chloe's or Matina's, for that matter.
Garius? Can you advise on this?

H is threatening to install wireless access at home. It would be nice to think I could login to hootoo from the garden, but H would never stop w*rking if that was the case
I'm in smug mode, the results of my latest thyroid function test show that I'm on too low a dose. Which I have been telling my GP for ages, she has finally agreed to increase my prescription so hopefully the gym visits will now start to make a difference. Yay!

Lil, if the bots will work in the presense of 2.4 Ghz cordless phones, then the 802.11B will not effect them. That uses the same spectrum.
