To Say Nothing of the Dog is excellent! Haven't read it in years though, so may need to get back to it if I can find the time. It is sort of related to Three Men in a Boat (Jerome K. Jerome turns up in it) but it also has a brilliant Hound of the Baskervilles pastiche and a lot about Coventry.

Urgh. Did that Palm link work for anyone? I installed it on my Palm but can't figure out what to use to open it. PalmReader just says no books are installed. I updated PalmReader, tried another program, tried re-installing 3 Men in a Boat. I'm gonna drain my batteries! I got that syncin' feeling! smiley - silly

I see you found Plucker. All you need is the reader, unless you want to download web pages to your Palm.

d'E, let me know if you can't get the download. I can e-mail you the zip file if you like.

I got told off for chuckling last night, H was trying to sleep!

Montmorency is such a brilliant name for a dog.

It rates on a par with 'Fontenbras', me thinks.

I just like the fact that for the first chapter or so it is not obvious which one is the dog, especially as Montmorency seems to have such strong views on boats.

A few threads ago, we discussed camping--in all its glory--and got some pretty good stories out of it. Some of them even rivaled the recounting of the 'oil stove' trip, or the 'tent erection' vignette. I bet that, collectively, we have many more experiences to draw from that would make an uproarious compendium of life's little comedies...

Finished the book yesterday and am now on To Say Nothing of the Dog. smiley - smiley
So, what do we wish to discuss about the book? My favourite bits would have to be the Steam Launches and the tin of pineapple.

I liked the Pineapple tin, and the general narrative where 'J' seemed to really just enjoy being out exploring.

The stuffed trout was pretty entertaining too

Titania (gone for lunch)

I'm only in chapter 4, since I wanted to finish the book I was currently reading ('Death comes as the end' by Agatha Christie, interestingly enough not staged in British surroundings but in Egypt during the pharaonic era)...

...but I bookmarked a quote that I must remember next time I pack a suitcase: 'We must not think of the things we could do with, but only of the things that we can't do without.'

...and since I'm the kind of person who packs a lot of things, 'just in case'...

Yes, his packing rant is very good and I am forced to agree entirely. I always take too much and lose my toothbrush.
