Witty Moniker Posted Mar 6, 2006
I posted some pictures of the interior of my gutted house. I'll be dipped, but I have no 'before' digital pictures on my hard drive. I have plenty in print, but they are all in storage now, so I can't scan them. Imagine walls and furniture, if you will.

I'm jealous that the work on your house is progressing so quickly Witty!
Marv, under what circumstances can you not be aware which 10 o'clock it is and thus need a 24hr watch

- Sounds good. Hopefully this spells a new era where your opinions and abilities are given the credit they deserve.
24 hour clock is useful for timetables and other planning-ahead type things. Reminds me of this scene from Spaced (apologies for the paraphrasing):
Daisy: Mike, when are you going on your TA thing?
Mike: Twenty-two hundred hours.
Daisy: Huh?
Tim: That's ten o'clock.
Daisy: Right. Would you mind taking Colin for a walk at about eight?
Mike: Huh?
Tim: That's twenty hundred hours.
Mike: Okay.
Wish I'd got interesting questions when I was a Teaching Assistant at uni. They tended to be either "Will I need to know this formula for the exam?" or "Why did I lose marks on this test?"

[tartaronne ] almost lurgy-free and determined to keep up and even write something intelligible when, hopefully, the thoughts move a bit faster and less painful through the cold porridge that seems to be her brain - or something...

M - That's bizarre... some of my students ask me things about psychiatry, most of them ask about what's likely to come up in the exam, how much I earn and if I've got any career advice for them.
Teuchter. I really really really want one of my first 10 choices! The thing is that No's 4-10 are all really popular jobs so if don't get enough points to get No 1-4 then I'm probably down to no 11, which I don't think that anyone else will want. None of the 20 are ones that I hate..
No's 1 and 2 are ones that I have a chance of. I just really hope I get one of my first choices. Still I'm lucky enough to be in the first 'guarenteed jobs' round. Time to now put my attention on getting the job that I want for 2007.

Z. I am visualizing you getting the job you really want.
The water rationing threat has reared it's ugly head. Which would be fine if it were fairly administered. Businesses and industries use much more water than residential users. (where I live - don't know about other places) But it is only the residential users who have to conserve. If there were incentives for industries to use less water, they'd find more efficient methods of doing things.
The good news is that we have a chance for rain on Wednesday from 0400 hours until 0600 hours.

I remember waiting for my UCAS offers Z, so you have my sympathy.
As far as what lecturers should be like-exciting lectures that enthuse you on a topic and give a basis for you own research, coupled with seminars that are well directed, to cover topics and ensure people like myslef don't dominate, whilst on essays: guidance on books to consider, but not setting them down absolutely, after all, you may not have time to read them all for a seminar, or your particular topic may need books not on any reading lists.

dElaphant (and Zeppo his dog (and Gummo, Zeppos dog)) - Left my apostrophes at the BBC Posted Mar 7, 2006
Kelli, there are places that list blogs, like http://blo.gs/ which lists the most recently updated stories but doesn't otherwise categorize them. And then there is google's blog search http://blogsearch.google.com/. But like Lil said, most people find blogs by word of mouth, or by jumping from blog to blog. Now that Ag and Santra both have blogs, either could make a reference to the other's essays, and the software automatically creates a cross-listing so the readers of one can find the other. Apart from that, functionally blogs are not much different than the journal entries here on h2g2.
Freddie killed my external hard drive. I've lost my entire music collection. Maybe not lost, but I have to wait till I get the updated version of the disk recovery software.
Look what I came across the other day: http://www.familycookbookproject.com/

What should library staff be like?
Not all be on lunch when you need them (photocopying office.)
Ideally, put office-hour working back an hour so they finish at 6 to cater for those who aren't free until 5.
Be able to answer specialist questions on issuing/ know someone who can.
Know where to start looking when your book list is very opaque about titles.
Have a bigger book budget.
Understand that sometimes people do mislay their library card (like the very nice lady on reception the other day)
Have a more usable catalogue, and a system that sends pre-emptive reminders, not a day after they were due back.

cross-linking is how most readers find blogs. many readers navigate to new blogs from a link in a new entry on a blog they already read. also, with the popularity of comments on blogs, a lot of times a person who runs a blog will say 'oh, that is a witty and insightful comment; i think i will go and visit this person's page' and voila, they add them to a 'blogroll' on the side of their page and have created a link.
my 'blogroll' - for lack of a better word - is constantly changing, however there are some main stalwarts that are always on it.

Having ed the whole of the last conversation in a concentrated burst of about 5 days , have arrived on one of the newly upholstered sofas, and will now almost certainly spectacularly fail to keep up with this conv.
Oh well.
