All this talk of Ruebens caused me to go out and get one at lunch. It was not a real rueben however, it was on a bagel. That was *interesting* and I am not sure I would ask for one again. It just needs rye bread.

Why not just a rye bagel?
I smother mine with a lot of mustard. A ton. One of the few times I've ate a traditional reuben (with sauerkraut) it was literally dripping with mustard, much to the horror of my eating companion.

What's wrong with mustard? But, on the other hand - does it taste anything other *but* mustard if you use a lot of it?

I like a lot of good spicy mustard with any sandwich.
Sporky, the thing that most people do not like about saurkraut is that it is sour. What is it about saurkraut that you do not like?

The best Reuben I ever had was in Baltimore.
But, back to the buttie.....does it have potatoes? I've never eaten a sandwich that had potatoes as part of the filling. Well....breakfast tacos maybe.
And I like sauerkraut. It crunches when it's made right. Adds a lovely texture to the sandwich. I've been known to pile some on a chilidog.

Sporky
I'd love to see your face if you smothered it in English mustard.
Going off into the blog to catch up

There are nutcases everywhere - I got this link from a Palm game messageboard - Spock singing about Bilbo:

It might take a while to load if you're using dial-up (like me) but I think it was worth it... *wipes tears*

One of my coworkers makes homemade mustard with honey and plenty of extra homegrown horseradish. She brought jars in for everyone and boy! Horseradish is not for the faint of heart. I'm thinking this mustard would be just the thing on a Reuben.

Ti, I have the Leonard Nimoy song Ballad of Bilbo Baggins on tape. It is a common song on The Doctor Demento Show, a novelty radio program that I used to listen to many years ago http://www.docterdemento.com

mmmm, reuben sandwiches.
My favorite is open-faced and mounded with cheese like a volcano. Pop it under the broiler until golden and bubbly.

I love spicey mustard.
I also love horseradish .... but it has to be the shredded just off the root radish, not the creamy stuff.
Wasabi is good also.

Corned beef and ketchup is one of my favourites, or cheese and Marmite.
Bacon and avocado is wonderful too.
Now I'm hungry . Milk and biccies before bed and fingers crossed that whatever woke us up at 3.30 am last night scratching or gnawing in the loft doesn't put in a return performance tonight

It is the vinegar in sauerkraut that I don't care for. And the saltiness. I'm not one for salty/cured foods.
I too appreciate a good horseradish mixture. Boy oh boy, if you ever have blocked sinuses all you need to do is get yourself some horseradish and whoosh

You definitely know it's good horseradish when you are crying and still eating.
My girlfriend will just watch my eyes to see how good the horseradish is.

I passed my driving test 1st time If I'd failed I think I would have ended up having to do the theory test part as well I was that close to the changeover time.
A chip buttie has potato as the filling. A bacon butty doesn't.
This is of course english chips which are sort of like fries but done better (bigger, chunkier, best bought from a chippy - traditional uk fast food, deep fried fish in batter and chips), it can have vinegar or some sort of sauce dressing if you want.
Key: Complain about this post
