On the This & New feature for Plain - personally I prefer that a link opens in the current window unless I ask for a new window. So I don't love the idea of using a list where someone has decided for me - although it does have the redeeming feature of being explicit about it -
but that might just be me - maybe some people love pop-up hell

On the ICQ thing - is it worth looking at a Gadget that inserts the standard style ICQ panel (online, chat etc thing) on a page. That way individual researchers can have it on their page & the ICQing researchers page could have a whole bunch of them (or parts of them)?
It's not as trick as the current ICQing page but would have the advantage of being used all over the place & providing the same info more or less.

I think thats one for the Towers Pastey - though they may be able to find a way to bypass the ban on that page so long as the code remains unchanged.

About the only other feature for a pulldown I've seen is the random selector thing I use on my homepage for the jukebox (though it's actually separate from the pulldown - but I don't know if random select is worth inclusion in a Gadget - though select a random SubEd/ACE/h2g2 staff member to bleat to has a certain anarchic appeal.

I'll look into the Random generation. I'm currently trying to get this thing together in XSLT and it's quite tough - having a lovely idea at first and then going through nasty long code. But it should be possible. Currently the hardest thing to implement is offsite ITEM list files. I want to avoid a potential security flaw. But the rest is going well .

I do like the idea of incoporating some form of chat into h2g2. I don't subscribe to the "Give us a chatroom Mark!!" school of thought, but It might be nice to have an entry thing in your user details page where you could put in your icq#, and chose whether you wished your status to be displayed on your page. That way anyone coming to your homepage could see if you were online, and have an icq chat with you. Also, it would be possible to have a central page, similar to the one Cy has done that lists all the researchers who use icq.
There's another thought.

Status indicators do not rely on javascript and I don't think any of the ICQ communication panel does either. However, a dynamic list such as A228205 would be far less useful without javascript.

Knowing nothing about XML, I'd thought that the external file would have contained either a bunch of tags or a set of delimited values.

Don't get me going about ignorance . I'm cynical for a reason, you know!
But I do enjoy taking on a challenge. I definately think we should stick to your idea of having a unified list. It will take a while to perfect though .

Unfortunately I'm going on a two-week long trip, come Thursday, which I am not looking forward to. But when I return I will continue trying to get this code together. But I know where to go if I need help .

I'm using Netscape 4.6 and your changing menu thingy seems to work fine on my browser.

I'd like to see a gadget where you can have a list of text/links where you specify days they can be shown on. (I want this for my birthdays page, but the parser always refused my javascript)

What about allowing researchers the abillity to specify a list of ICQ UINs and Nicks as a sort of contact list that shows who is online at any point. Would that make a good gadget?

I do agree that adding ICQ details to user profiles would be a good idea though.
