It's like the stopping distances in the highway code, they're useless as they've remained pretty much the same since a Ford Anglia was one of the most common cars on the road. Modern cars can stop a lot quicker than that, also the type of brakes, tyres and the weight of the vehicle affect the stopping distance quite considerably.

So in effect we are looking at modernising laws, procedures and handbooks for it all.....

That was really disgusting!
If it was in the US, I'd blame it on poorly funded and overworked social welfare systems.

In Ireland, we have a penalty points system which is working very well. It works by giving various numbers of permanent points for stuff, eg 4 for not having insurance, 6 for breaking the speed limit, 6 for driving w/out a seatbelt, etc. Get 12 and your licence is revoked. Why not make that more widespread? The only problem is that visiting British drivers break the laws willy-nilly, because for them speeding is a flat fine and they are not subject to Irish laws.

As a new dad myself (45 years) with all my experance of life and my missus experance with brovvers and sister as I, myself having no siblings, I am still in shock about the birth (pleasent of course!) but also my need for some advice sometimes. I am becoming more convinced that, there should be a ministery of family, which incompasses,
1 education of "parents to be" and a test of them to see if there capible of being "parents" before any pregency
2 to protect the "any member of any family from abuse by any other family member"
3 to provide "family planning" and also advice to any family at any time, anywhere!
4 the use of "commen sence" when comming to a disicion!
education
socical services
family health
houseing
security/policing
all these could come under the "ministery"
IMHO its the most single important thing we produce is the next generation and most of the time the previous generation recconises it but it when things go wrong, is when were judged as a nation, this "mineristry" could be open to all sorts of abuse, so it's transparicy, honesty, countibility is open for all to see!
I will be open to answer question on these or any other points anyone fills fit to ask me

They are in a meeting right now, trying to decide whether to start a subcommitee to investigate further or have some more courses to train their field workers.
I have no idea, as you say we read these kind of messages like clockwork and each and every case is terrible.
On the other hand look around, perhaps next door is next in the news. Though I would hesitate to make hasty conclusions."

The thing is the grass roots social workers usually have their hands tied by policy, they want to do something about it but they have to abide by the rules however stupid they seem
And *Whisper whisper* My nextdoor neighbour did a runner in July taking her daughter with her and on the otherside Fred and Edna are in their 80's and still in love

This is not directly related to anything that as gone before in this thread, but I think it is a quick and simple way to end discrimination in the workplace. All companies must regularly (ie every year, six months, whatever; but no less than once per year) publish the earnings of every employee.
I'm not talking about 'ranges' here, I'm talking about the individual wages, salaries, bonuses, perks, etc given to each and every individual who works for the company, both gross and nett income.
If someone is promoted/demoted, that will be mentioned (eg Mr. Murphy earned E600 per week as a programmer for the first four months, then got promoted and now earns E700 per week as an executive programmer).
In case of fluctuating income, it is OK to publish the average earnings >of that employee.<
For salespeople, their basic salary will be noted as seperate from their average earned...earnings.
If the company works with any freelancers or contractors, they will publish what they paid to them and how in a seperate thing.
Sure, this would take quite a bit of paper, but I guess that most of it could be recycled when people are finished.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Speaking of recycling, we should also have special task forces to go into rubbish dumps and physically sort recyclable from non-recyclable.
Hey Rev, remember the post article about sending juvenile delinquents to volunteer to serve their community? That's one of the things they could do...
I also advocate a "pay as you throw" system, where recycling is free, but trash collection costs by the bag. It would make people think about what they pitched.
I don't know about other folks in the UK and Eire but we have 2 bins one for recycling and one for ordinary rubbish, it wasn't until we got the green bin we realized how much recyclable stuff we threw away we used to put out 4 black bags a week for the bin men now it's 4 every 2 weeks and our green wheelie bin is full every 2 weeks.
Traveller in Time counting bins
"We have three official bins and some four to collect metal, paper, waste glass and recycle containers (plastic and glass bottles).
I reuse the old bread bag to pack my lunch. Oh yes, I collect small cardbord boxes at the office for the kids school."
Reefgirl (Brunel Baby) Posted Sep 4, 2004
Weird our green bins take everything but glass and we take those to the bottle bank, we use carrier bags as a kitchen bin, we got a thing from Betterware that screws onto a cupboard door or something, it has a lid and you can hook carrier bags underneath to use for the rubbish, we've been doing that for years
Scandrea Posted Sep 4, 2004
Apollyon - Grammar Fascist Posted Sep 5, 2004
The Irish bin system is the same as in Great Britain, except that the green one is for ordinary rubbish and the blue one is for recycleable.
There is also a charge of 15c on any plastic bag you get from a supermarket, which is used to fund environmental issues. This system works a treat.
Reefgirl (Brunel Baby) Posted Sep 5, 2004
I wish they'd do that here then people would reuse the carrier bag's, mum does but I don't but the get used for bin's and packed lunch if Alex goes on a school trip and for my sisters lunch so they don't get wasted, and Safeway/Morrison's and Tesco have a bag recycling point in their stores
