It is with a carefully measured dose of cynicism that I sit and write while I am surround by people who are functionally illiterate. It is not that they can't read, they just don't like to. It is not that they can't write, they just don't like to. One of them writes notes and fills out forms as part of her living. Another of they writes whatever the teachers at her school makes her write. Both of them are capable of creative writing, but the mere site of a piece of blank paper sends their imaginations scurrisome. I think that this is a scrurrilous bit of nastiness on the part of bosses and teachers. Why should anyone learn to read an' write if they are just going to be bored to death. On the other hand, why should anyone teach someone or expect someone to be able to read and write, if they don't care what happens to the soul of that student or employee when they are forced to reiterate or regurgitate soul-stealing crap? There's your happy thought for the day. Run with it while you can...
