I always quite liked Divisions One, Two, Three and Four. When the Premiership broke away from the Football League, there was no reason to change the names of the remaining leagues.
As for the "championship", well I ask you. What a stupid stupid stupid idea. I haven't come across a single fan of a "championship" team who thinks that it is anything other than risable change

I couldn't agree more.
Myself, I maintain it's a huge conspiracy to ensure Plymouth Argyle never play First Division football... we never managed it for real, and in the year of the Great Premiership Swindle when everything was renamed, we were relegated from Division Two to Divison Two. So now we get promoted from Division Two to... 'The Championship'.
What a load of old cobblers.

the only sense that could be made of the name changes to me, and this is stretching it, is that The Championship will become the top english league, and the Premiership will become a Great Britain league and some of the scottish clubs will join it.

I notice Number Six has remained very quiet about his brief sojourn in Division 3...

Which Scottish clubs are going to leap into the British Championship ?
Admittedly Celtic and Rangers could probably attract better players if they played in the British league, but beyond them ?

GreyDesk Posted Jul 6, 2004
Rangers and Celtic will never be allowed into the English leagues as that would fundamentally undermine the position of having two separate national FAs for England and Scotland.

Grandpa BIRIYANI Posted Jul 6, 2004
About the Celtic n Rangers,.,..why should they be allowed straight into the "chamionship" or "Premier" ????....that would be MOST UNFAIR on the other teams competing to get there in the 1st place !!!!!,,,,So if they do join, let em start at square 1 !!!!

Secretly Not Here Any More Posted Jul 7, 2004
Is that square one, League One, the old Division One, the old, old First Division or somewhere in the non-league?

Grandpa BIRIYANI Posted Jul 7, 2004

riotact : like a phoenix from the ashes Posted Jul 7, 2004
i remember reading a few years ago about an idea to merge the scottish, dutch and perhaps belgian leagues to make an entity able to compete with the larger championships. does anyone else remember this or have any details?

Secretly Not Here Any More Posted Jul 7, 2004
I remember someone pointing out that Southampton is closer to Bruges than Glasgow, and London is closer to Paris, so if Scottish teams joined us then why can't the French or Belgians? I think it was trying to rubbish the 'geographical convenience' argument.

i remember a documentary where an old eskimo woman said that the winter was the "real life"; a life for dreaming; for conjuring spells...
so THIS is the real football season! where we are free to imagine all sorts of wonders that wenger, deschamps and mourinho have not yet planned; that henry, beckham and shevchenko have not yet accomplished. so why this "silence monotone" in this summer of all possibilities? in default of all else, lets us have worlds of words, gentlemen! do you love football so little?

GreyDesk Posted Jul 8, 2004
Yes that should be possible, I don't think that HM Prisons allow Indian takeaways.

Gary Megson will say - "they were a better team than us, and despite our defenders being allowed to kick their team all over the park, we were lucky to hold them to 4 - 0"

Yes, it's been done.
Before too long, GreyDesk will post a thread inviting us all to predict the winners of assorted competitions over the next twelve months.
We'll all reply to it and then he'll forget all about it by June.
