You would have thought we would have more participation by now.
For some reason an old episode in my life comes to mind.
I was showing a neighbor how to ice fish.
When we were sure that the ice was strong enough we got some bait and set off across the surface of Thompson lake.
I found a spot that I suspected had fish so I got out my ice spud and chopped a hole tpo fish through.
My neighbor however didn't bring an ice spud so I loaned him mine.
He chopped through about six inches, then rested a minute and began to chop again. Just as he broke through the spud slipped out of his hand and disappeared beneath the ice. I never saw it again. And also that was the last time I ever took him ice fishing.

GT - yes, there is definitely more than one item involved. Quite possibly a great many items, in fact. DGI +1

how would you know if you had become a victim of tingo?
You have a (temporarily cylindrical) mass of worms on your desk.
QI - Where did that tin go?
Geggs Posted Mar 11, 2011
Less money? Maybe, as a secondary effect of tingo happening, but not directly.
Gaining a mass of worms? No. It's fair to say that the victim of tingo doesn't gain anything.
But you've both picked up on something: the question doesn't ask you to work out exactly what tingo is (though there would be points for that) but rather how you could identify if it had occured.

Nice story, Shagbark. I'd give you points, but it doesn't really relate to this QI in any way at all. Sorry.
Tingo couldn't be described as accidental either. It all sounds quite intentional, in facr

recap
It is widely understood that you know when you've been tangoed, but how would you know if you had become a victim of tingo?
a great many items involved but not money directly.
an intentional victimization -not accidental.
no gain of
QI - Where did that tin go?
Geggs Posted Mar 11, 2011
Well, that is to say, it sounds intentional, and the last person to take part would definitely know that it would result in tingo, but it is conceivably possible that others could participate in the tingo without actively knowing that they were involved at the time, but even they would probably know it after the event.
Cor, this is difficult. The mental gymnastics that I'm doing in order to clarify something while, at the same time, tell you hardly anything.

That kind of sounds a bit, but not quite, like a pyramid selling scheme?
QI - Where did that tin go?
Geggs Posted Mar 11, 2011
It does doesn't it? Though, as far as I am aware, nothing is sold.

Not as such, though it could leave you feeling somewhat aggrieved.
Actually, I'm torn here. I'm not quite sure whether you tripped a klaxon there or not.

No, Taff. The victim of tingo isn't swapping anything.
