QI - Where did that tin go?
shagbark Posted Mar 13, 2011
Talking abouty borrowing reminds me of another episode from my past.
I was moving to smaller quarters and could not fit in a large Sofa.
A friend volunteered to keep it for me until I figured out what to do.
I had forgotton to deal with it for about six months.
I finally rang him up and his dad answered the phone and told me he had gone into the army.
But what happened to my sofa I asked.
We had 'goodwill industries'( a local charity) take it off our hands.
At least that solved the problem but they got to list it on their taxes as a donation I didn't and never got any compensation.

Bob, only if you want to. It's not strictly necessary, but you would get points for identifying the origin.

Shagbark, I'll give you a DGI +1 for that memory, as your friend does seem to fit into the catergory of the type of person in question.

The word "tingo" does indeed come from Easter Island. Have a +3 Bob!
So, tingo anyone? It does have a specific, but not ceremonial or custom-related, meaning.

in cyprus if you arranged to buy a car off a main dealer, you would ask for a "gizzit", a hire car to use untill yours was delivered, at no charge to yourself

Easter Island as an origin is fair enough. It would have been really weird if it derived from Christmas Island.

We are well past all the klaxons now, by the way, so feel free to have a stab at the meaning of tingo.

Here's a stab at it. Tingo: A hazard for those landlords renting furnished duplexes.
The renter moves out and takes everything with him (not informing anyone that he is doing so). The renter forfeits the security deposit but the landlord then has to replace everything that was taken.

No, that's not it. The same person is living at the same property before and after tingo.

Not exactly. He has used the word in the title of two of his books - the first being The Meaning Of Tingo - but that is not the definition of the word.

Yes, the borrower is friend. DGI +1 there, I think.

Coincidentally, Ms Stress reports:
One of her friends has family somewhat south of here. Said family made a room available to a Chch refugee couple, saw them settled in then went shopping for extra food...
Yes, that's right. Pretty much everything easily movable, gone.
