Is it that he didn't even consider the barrel or rifling or whatever? He only looked for a bullet that matched the calibre of the gun used, and then was it proved as far as he was concerned.

Even then you've got to put the gun in someone's hand (sorry, comming over all CSI-speak now), so you're talking GSR, fingerprints as suchlike.

won't work these days as the calibre used is now 5.56mm

You've missed a step - decide who fired the gun, comes after X which comes after who had the gun (legally or otherwise)
