Interestingly (and I'm sure this was on QI TV) it is disputed that AGB invented the phone... (although he WAS the first to patent it in the US)...
IIRC there were people in France/Germany who have prior claim.
"He brought together the discoveries of five other person, who were they..."
Pretty sure at least one of them would have to be Edison, as he was doing work in Telegraphy/Phonography prior to that.

Interesting Argon0
Never new that! +3DGI to you.
Be very careful though. Taff has already tripped over the Edison banana skin!!!!

Ok, I'm going to go out on a limb and say one of the others work he was drawing on was Marconi...
Which reminds me - one of the rival "phone" inventors was Italian...

Any chance of a recap of what's been got and what needs getting?
QI - Please sir...Sir!!...SIR!!!!!!
gandalfstwin OGGMSTKMBGSUIKWIATA Posted Mar 5, 2010
OK chaps and chapesses!
A recap has been called for, so here we go!!
We now know that the telephone was the invention we were looking for, and the inventor was a Scotsman who moved to Canada to teach the deaf. He was looking for something that would aid his students, and Taff earned a shiny +6 for suggesting a hearing aid!!
We now know that the inventor of the telephone was Alexander Graham Bell.
Electromagnets are involved, as are a microphone and a speaker.
One of our innovators is Michael Faraday.
We need to know what Faraday came up with.
We also need to know the othere four innovators are, and what they produced to interest Bell.
Over to you!!!

Faraday - Capacitor (IIRC) Farad is a unit of capacitance(how's that used in a telephone though)?

Memory tells me that Faraday came up with the principles of electromagnetism.
As an attempt to revive this interesting thread, I shall guess that Bell wore bifocal spectacles? (they were invented by Benjamin Franklin who also invented, among other things, the lightning conductor. The thing I love about Franklin is that he had an asbestos purse to stop his money burning a hole in his pocket- how good is that?)
I think someone mentioned Volta and a little known fact is that, although Volta is credited with inventing the battery, he owed much to the early research of the Swiss female chemist Eva Reddi and her French husband Claude Du Rassell who prolonged her work.
