GT, are we looking for someone who "invented" the speaker, or who came up with the concept which lead to the speaker being invented?
Was this person contemporaneous with Bell?

The chap I am looking for was some 25 years older than Bell, but he linked electromagnets and the vibrations produced creating sounds, yes!

Perchance Wimshurst? (the name took a bit of digging out of the murky grey matter>
His rotating discs which, I think I recall from school, make noises other than those, er, related to the bearings.

Yeah, magnetism.
One subsequent development includes demagnetising ships (or did during the days of magnetic mines).

Think the speaker was Edisons idea (has a lot to answer for given he also invented the electronic vote calculator)did a lot of early dragons den type work, pissed of tessler a fair bit as well..silly man
