Does it have anything to do with their hands/gloves? If they've been handling various chemicals, a smart spy might be able to analyse what they've handled by looking at residues on their gloves/hands.
You always see rubber gloves in CSI. In French a, ahem, different kind of rubber is called a capote Anglais or English letter and men of letters could be the MIB, Men in Black, who have their fingerprints removed to avoid leaving forensics.

Not rubber gloves or fingerprints.

>> a smart spy might be able to analyse what<<
I'll give that a DGI +1.
there was someone, a type of person who Vandeveer Bush lived in mortal fear of, and became the focus of the secret project that is the basis of this QI - and it wasn't spies, at leas not initially.

Re: 1942.
It's important to recognise that by 1942 no bomb had been constructed or tested, it was until December of that year that Enrico Fermi performed the 1st man-made (the at least 17th terrestrial-bound) nuclear fission chain reaction (see "QI - 'Culture and Infamy') Oppenheimer is doing his work on chain reactions around this time. It's all building towards the climax we are terribly familiar with.
and it's in this febrile and creative period that Bush acts. But what did he do?

Squash players? The first nuclear pile was created in the squash courts of (iirc) the University of Illinois.

and - correction - it was Chicago, not Illinois.
QI - Penning an open letter.
HonestIago Posted Dec 9, 2009
Well, Chicago is in Illinois, so I was half right.
So V.B wasn't worried about squash players getting their balls *really* warm then?
QI - Penning an open letter.
Clive the flying ostrich: Amateur Polymath | Chief Heretic. Posted Dec 9, 2009
Point taken, but we strive for accuracy at all tines.
Nope V.B was intensely relaxed about squash players sporting activities, but if you like he was professionally concerned about what they might get up to in their spare time off the court.

QI - Penning an open letter.
HonestIago Posted Dec 9, 2009
Oh, and isn't there an old reference to homosexuality as the French malaise?

Could it be that a paper that should have been labelled 'secret' wasn't to disguise its real importance???
