I was talking to an aquaintance of mine who actually used to be a blacksmith about this cyclops thing. He thinks you are alluding to an actual practise of some blacksmiths of wearing an eyepatch to prevent flying sparks from blinding them in both eyes!!!

Yes, that's correct - Greek blacksmiths wore an eyepatch, so cyclopses were often blacksmiths.
(The German medieval ones wore a board across their eyes with a narrow slit cut in it, like Eskimo sunglasses. That's where the expression "ein Brett vor dem Kopf haben" comes from - having a board in front of your head = having a very narrow world view, being stupid, unable to see the obvious.)
