To clarify a point - my mother and most of the rest of my family have lived in Australia (Adelaide) since 1972 smiley - bigeyes

I see....
Deport your family to Australia eh?
Sounds a bit like our national history anyway.
But why Adelaide - didn't you like them? smiley - smiley

Lonnytunes - Winter Is Here

London 1972. My eldest brother, sister and I were all over there on working holidays. My sister got a letter from mum in NZ saying the rest of the family are moving to Australia. (I am the oldest of 9. 5 boys, 4 girls).

We rang the parents saying "you can't move to Aus, NZ is our home and we are returning there".

Mum replied "If it's good enough for you to be flitting about the world, it's good enough for us as well".

Not much you can say to that. They first went to Melbourne where mum heard Adelaide was similar to Christchurch and as she originally comes from Christchurch the family moved there in 1975 and have been there ever since.

My brother never returned from England. My sister met and married a guy from Adelaide and I moved to Sydney for a while before returning to NZ.

Incidently dad's father was born in Adelaide in the late 1890s.

Fair enough. You can't argue with that logic.

You were talking about visiting them this year if I recall. Is that still on the cards?

Probably early next year.

Beacause I have emphasemia and asthma I am not supposed to fly. Hope to travel over to Aus as a passenger on a cargo boat early next year. Still checking it out.

Watch out for those cargo ships - hiding in a box can give you cramps.

Friends recently did a similar trip.

New technology has reduced the number of officers needed on cargo ships.

Some have turned the surplus accomodation into upmarket cabins and recreation areas. They have proper lounges, BARS, satelite TV. You eat with the captain and other officers.

The one my friends went on went to Sydney, Melbourne, Fiji, Auckland. $150 per day for 2 people.

Hopefully I can catch one to Aus. Spend as much time as I want there and catch another one back to NZ.

That's a brilliant deal!
Was that impressed I even showed it to the bride. Suitably impressed.

Just back from my trip away and found out I get acute seasickness smiley - sadface. I say I've only just found out as this was my first boat trip on the ocean on a pretty choppy day. Saw a lot of the side of the boat regrettably (as well as my breakfast).

Sea travel may not be for me.

i take it you weren't sailing then - sailing in a dingy in a good stiff breeze takes your mind totally off seasickness because you spend all your time worrying that the boat will tip over. one of the main tricks with seasickness is to keep your head up and your whole self above deck. which is not your natural response if you feel sick. good luck - i used to get horrible sea sickness, but i'm all better now

Wowbagger, I read on one of the forums you wanted to post some of your holiday pix but you wern't sure how to.

Scan them and save as 'gifs'. You then need to post them on a web site. You then link from the web site to h2g2.

The biographt pictureon my page I sent to Shazz, who has a web page, by ICQ. She reduced it to a reasoanable size and told me what she had called it and I then posted it on my h2g2 page.

Lets try that paragraph again

The biography picture on my page I sent, by ICQ, to Shazz who has a web page. She reduced it to a reasonable size and told me what she had called it and I then linked to it from my h2g2 page.

I don't get sea sick. In another life I worked on cargo boats as a messman, looking after the area where the crew ate/relaxed. And was that mess a mess after loading/unloading phosphate.

Drove me to drink.

How did she put it on her web page though? I could do that over here if I could? Or should I just do as you have... send them over to her?

If you have got a web page, post it there and then link to it from your h2g2 page

A new, topical, reason to be glad you are a New Zealander and not an Australian.

The ability to cross a city street without the risk of being run over by yet another Australian sporting team's victory parade

Lonnytunes - Winter Is Here

During 1999, the occasional Australian sporting team had success on the international stage.
This is such a rare occurrence that thousands of screaming Aussies thronged city streets to welcome the conquering heroes.
Small children and old ladies were put at risk during this show of patriotism and unasuming modesty.
