It's Saddam, it's Bush

did I say Bush surprised me? I might have, I don't remember. But I don't think Bush surprises me. He just makes me sad, weary, and fed up, I think.

CL, I know this too shall pass, but it's more than unfortunate that we live in the middle of it! In the immortal words of Fred Durst at the Grammys, we all just wish it would hurry up and go away!smiley - peacedove

Very good, thank you for that.

It's a shame the one little Turkish comment has been negated by a greedy government in the intervening time.

I still say this is history repeating itself, but not a reflection of Chanberlain/Hitler as the hawks would have it. More like any one the nasty little imperial moves by the US and others over the centuries. Gunship diplomacy with economic reward as a motive, not to mention the national fervour that Chomsky talks about. Woulda shoulda coulda, think what this world would be with Gore rightfully in the presidency.

Sigh... If only. Ironically there is a superstition that any president elected in a year ending in '0' will be assassinated. Ronald Reagan supposedly broke the curse, when he *survived* the attempt on him. (NB Memo to any Americans who might take what I say the wrong way... I said 'there is a superstition', not that I am advocating assassination! Of *course* I am not!smiley - peacedove

Weird that there are people who seem to be- of Saddam, not Bush; as if that would solve the problem? when questioned, they usually come back with 'Wouldn't you have assassinated Hitler if you'd had the opportunity?'
well, perhaps. But that parallel is fuzzy at best. And what bloody good would it have done, in his case there were plenty quite capable of taking over from him.

I happen to believe, Mandragora, that there is little or no resemblance between Saddam and Hitler - the latter actually wanted to, planned to and *did* go a-conquering... I also believe that there are plenty ready to take over from Saddam *and* Bush, if either drops off his perch!smiley - peacedove

Yup, there's definently a few regimes I'd love to change, e.g.

Israel, the USA, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UK...

the list goes on. But at least I, unlike Bush, understand that you can't go around chaging regimes--democratic or not--all over the place, or where will it end?

Well Bush wasn't really elected in my (and many other's) opinion (read "Stupid White Men"--it's really funny!) So I guess that means old GWB is safe. Oh, well.

Probably the same. Remember how many millions Clinton through of Welfare, and how many murderous wars he commanded (anyone remember, Somalia--was he President then?--Serbia in 1999, the repeated bombings of Iraq?)

aye, that is my angle too Della.
You'd think that anyone making a case for a parallel would have a modicum of familiarity with Hitler and his doings. However they are the same ones advocating a nice easy assassination, so they can't have...

I'd wager that a large proportion of the above also would state that the US 'saved Europe from itself' in WWII (not necessarily a US opinion either.)

I hear that saying "the USA saved us in World War II" all the time here in New Zealand... In reality, *comparatively* few men from NZ fought, and the women and children aw a constant flood of Americans here in good old Godzone on R&R - so they saw a different war from what people in Europe experienced!smiley - peacedove

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

I've just seen some footage of Bush speaking today - I don't know where he was, but it's perfectly clear to me that this man is utterly hellbent on war. Nothing else is going to satisfy him. It almost seems that he can't speak a sentence without using the word 'war'. "In a time of war" "The first war of the 21st century"

Is that what he wants to go down in history as? The man responsible for the first 21st century war? What on earth is going on in his head?

SOMEBODY STOP HIM FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!

If someone could just explain to me WHY?

It can't be a simple as oil prices or a place in history or consolidating the next election or even an actual belief in the "logic" of it.

WHY?

'cause Saddam tried to kill his daddy! That makes as much sense as anything else the man does.

His Daddy paid Saddam and his cohorts to keep the peace. No one seems to remember that one. Does anyone know a paid *ally* that didn't come back to bite the US in the ass later?
