"But then, I live on stolen land, and I admit it and I'm not proud..."
I have trouble with the concept of land as something that is owned.

Your rebuttal is more ridiculous than my post actually.
For example, Spain was so impoverished by her new world loot she somehow managed to plunge Europe into a extreme state of inflation. You must have missed that right, Maolmuire?
And your confusion of popular culture with love for the United States is pretty naive too I think. I guess the poor looking for opportunities aren't the only ones who are fooled, huh?
Chances are if they are or ever were fleeing a mickey mouse regime the mickey mouse in question was made or at least groomed in the USA.
And as far as the Iraqis celebrating in the streets after being liberated by all those zonked on speed yanks, we'll all just see won't we? That is if people are so callous as to let it happen.
Ain't human experiments fun?

Me too, Neugen but unfortunately, if you don't establish title, meets and bounds, they encroach on you and then what?

They named one car, Pontiac, after an indian. The rest are usually named after rich white guys, a president, towns in England or Kansas, Roman gods or somebody's idea of a catchy sounding name.

Maybe that's the excuse the white sttlers/invaders used. "If the Injuns don't believe in land ownership, no one owns it and ergo--finders keepers!"

I'm convinced that Turkish "peacekeepers" (i.e. soldiers) will be involved in "liberating" (i.e. invading and ethnically cleansing) the Kurdish North of Iraq. Or am I just paranoid?

Geoff, did you say you were looking at a print copy of the Economist? If you tell me the date, I'm pretty sure I can find it. I'm sitting at my workstation about fifty feet away from our "hard copy vault", filled with current issues of about 6000 or 8000 periodicals titles waiting to be filmed or scanned. If we don't have the issue of Economist that you're talking about, then someone in my department needs to call the publisher and ask for a replacement copy anyway!
Later,

I'm sure they named a few more things after Native Americans. Now they seem to think that the culture that their ancestors almost wiped out is cool.

I don't remember getting any days off school for Columbus Day in the 70s or 80s. Maybe they only do this in some parts of America?

Analiese....would you be so kind as to open a new thread on the complaints of Native Americans?
Your continuing diatribes here are really annoying.
Please, don't misunderstand me. The plight of Native Americans is important to me, but its' continuious insertion into a thread involving international brinksmanship seems a bit wasted.
Your insistance on bringing the subject to point here is only allowing it to become lost in the chaff.

Starbirth, I am saying that Saddam Hussein is not physically able to strike the USA with any missile! I hadn't thought of the American military bases all over the planet, but I don't think that's what *you* meant either!

I appreciate your support, anhaga, and that you seem to understand what I mean... I feel megatonnes of hostility from ? and Analiese, and I feel very sad about that - the hate is all on their side but it makes us all look bad. There have never been any *hate*, put-downs, personal insults, accusations of personal issues or mental problems from/between the other people : Zagreb, Tacsatduck, Frogbit, etc.., whatever side they are on. I don't understand what's going on here - it's splitting us all who are supposed to be on the same side! What gives?

Well, I only saw it on an Americsn TV show--so I guess that may not be totally reliable. But why would Chipmunks lie?

>>All I know about New Zealand is that it has lots of sheep, mountains, and some interesting fauna.<<
Not a lot else, Dryopithecus, but it does have, contrary to what ? says, a very varied (racially and culturally) population. The sheep are fewer in number than they were, the mountains are the same, we also have geothermal wonders (and sulphur stenches), some lovely cities (Wellington for one) and oh - all sorts! Drop in, sometime, it's nicer than ? thinks!

Geoff, two points. You got your stats from the CIA Fact Files, and expect objective truth? Secondly, before sanctions, Iraq had the highest rate of literacy, health care and the lowest rate of infant mortality anywhere in the Middle East. Iraq is a *secular* state and as such, had a pretty good record on womens' rights too!

I've started a Native American thread on "Ask the h2g2 Community" so the Iraq-war-discussers don't declare war on Analiese and everyone else discussing Native Americans.

Folks....I've been a "lurker" here for "lo these many posts".(OK...occasional input...but only opinion...*see thread topic*)
This thing has degenerated from its' proposed purpose to personal attacks that I've not seen allowed elsewhere on H2G2.
You are some brave, if not somewhat masochistic Researchers!
I must say, it has been entertaining, but.....you all might want to re-focus in another thread. This one is totally unmanageable!!!LOL
