The "elders" think they know more than those who are younger than they are... It wasn't a dig at age... It was a dig at mis-representation and being treated like... 10 year olds... as 10 year olds are most of the times mis-understood and I mean... come on... every parents dream phrase is... respect your elders...

And like you say... you know 10 year olds to come up with brilliant comments... hell I know a 5 year old who is a comic genius...

They're just mis-understood...

And treated like inferiors...

Aye, and doesn’t it show.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good argument - that's assuming you know the facts in the first place.

You want to get over to Opinions of War about Iraq thread. They are talking about Southern USA Blues Music there - I think, and before that it was the relative merits of coal and oil as a fuel.

I came here to let it be known that A) I support your petition, and b) to explain my complaint about it. As to Spook's comment, I agree with your point. However, BBC is not requiered to give us free speech as far as I know. I wish they would give us more free speech, but I don't think we can consider ourselves to have a right to it here.

bulls**t of course it's a human right. same as sex. right we wouldn't have vocal cords if we weren't expected to use them, same as i wouldn't have a p***s if i wasn't expected to use it.

Uncle Monty (nothing much going on here then)

Undoubtedly it is a human right. The question is, is it a right that the BBC must neccessarily extend to us on their messageboards? Clearly the BBC is itchy about swearwords and the like - however, they allow debate about Iraq on the BBC messageboards, so why it isn't allowed here is a mystery - seems somewhat inconsistent.

I would argue that the purpose of h2g2 is/ was to create a "community". As members of a community, we ought to have the right to free speech. Isn't that what our troops are supposed to be fighting for?

dude, exactly isn't the h2g2 mission statement something along the lines of "a antempt to create a community in which the members can come together and share opinons and thoughts." they're just slashing down the sol purpose that h2g2 exists.

You talk of Free speech as an absolute right to be exercised whenever you want, wherever you want and with whoever you choose. It isn’t and never has been and never will be, any more than sex is a right whenever you want, wherever you want and with whoever you chose although there are some people who seem to think that is an absolute right - they are usually called rapists. Just as the right to sex can be curtailed in certain circumstances in the interests of the majority, so can free speech As has been said before, there is a time and place for everything.

The reason why the present restrictions are in force are explained in the following.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/A735275

If you disagree with the policy, then complaining here is aiming at the wrong target. The people who set the policy are outside h2g2 and probably never read it. I you want to complain about a policy decision, you go the people that make the policy, not those that implement it. But, has been said before, it’s the BBCs ball and they set the game. If you don’t like the game, start your own game with your own ball. You are free to do that.

There seems to be a bit of misunderstanding about what exactly the BBC is. It is not like any other media organisation. I would go as far as to say that there is no other organisation in the entire world like the BBC. Because if its unique characteristics and the way it is constituted it has responsibilities that do not affect other media organisations. With responsibilities comes rights, just as with rights comes responsibilities. The two are inseparable although sadly the responsibilities bit tends to get ignored in rush to exercise perceived rights.

If this sounds pretentious, I am sorry. It is difficult not to be when presented with some of the juvenile things I have read in relation to this subject. During discussions on this subject I have received personal abuse twice. This suggests to me that I am hitting the right target.
