Is there anywhere a reason given for this preposterous policy?
I don't think any should be off limits in what is supposed to be a free, democratic country espousing the values of free speech. We are at war for democracy, right?

Why on earth should we be banned from voicing our opinions regarding IRAQ?
We are being innundated from all sides in the Television News and Newspaper coverage, News created by propaganda ,so much so, are we to be brainwashed into thinking that this war ,or ANY war is right? I still have to be convinced that any war not in defence of ones own country is morally justified.
I lost a leg in a non existent war in Trieste ,Italy in 1948 and to this day, no one can tell me what I was doing there .

So, would you say it was not moraly right to declare war aginst Germany in 1914, despite the fact the we had Defence Treaty with Belgium and again in 1939 when we had a Defence Treaty with Poland?

When "pre-emptive" becomes a common legal argument, then we're in deep doo-doo.

Stuart...
not to fight or argue...
But... I think... that the reasoning behind Britain getting involved with WW1 and WW2 is not due to a moral restriction but a sense of fear from British officials... at the time (1914) was losing the very boundaries of it's Empire and Germany was the biggest threat at that time... So they had to be stopped... thus... war's declared...
And in WW2 Britain had the same fear... it's the Old Enemy returning for one final last fight against the "hero"... when the "hero" feels threatened by the "enemy" again, he picks up his sword and faces his "enemy"... but it seemed that the "hero" could not face such an "enemy" alone and in turn the "hero" gathers up his "merry men" to face the "enemy" and the "enemy" replenishes his strength too... But the "hero" prevailed due to prolonged attacks on the "enemy" by numerous "merry men" including a former "enemy" turned "hero"...
It's not a moral issue...
It's a matter of fear... a fear of the Domino Effect... one country falls... eventually (unless someone stops it) all countries will fall...
Thank you...

Not quite the full story. When Germany attacked France in 1914, Britain would have been quite happy to stand by and let them get on with it. There was not a lot of love lost between Britain and France at that time. Britain only entered the war when Germany attempted to by-pass the French defences and go through Belgium. Britain had an obligation under the Treaty of London 1839 to guarantee Belgium neutrality. At the time the treaty was signed it was France and the Netherlands that where the potential problem.
In August 1939 Britain and Poland entered into a mutual defence agreement because it was feared that because of the The Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, Germany and Russia where about to carve up Poland between themselves. Germany’s invasion of Poland with Stalin lurking on the other side looked like the fears were about to be realised. Nobody expected Hitler to abregate The Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact though.

We are not talking about pre-emptive strikes here but treaty obligations.

So who's got Iraq's back???...
There's no love on that ground...
And England would of happily of seen France obliterated in 1914 before they would intervene... The treaties were just in a matter of coincidence... why do you France did so badly in WW2... England deliberately fumbled them...

I forgot to mention the potential "backs" of Iraq...
Syria... Iran... North Korea...
I think that's all... North Korea's the biggest threat...

I also think that the whole "France against the war" is revenge against Great Britain... it's a good conspiracy theory if you think about it...

I was going to say something along those lines, but thought it might be a bit xenophobic. Agincourt, Waterloo and Trafalgar probably have a lot to do with it.
