the "joys" of the boy racers who spend all weekend driving round and round the one way system with their stereos blasting, leaning out of the windows and shouting "slapper!" or "gerremoff!" at the local lasses... (not that any of them have owt to shout about, they're not exactly tash themselves (generally speaking)).
you also forgot to mention that spanish city is nee mair

I wanted to give the place at least a vaguely good write-up Besides, I thought the problem was supposed to have gone away since they redesigned the one-way system...
And what do you mean the Spanish City is nee mair? Sheesh, I go away for a couple of years and the place goes to the dogs...

tis all true, unfortunately. despite local uproar, the rides have been moved onto the grass by the promenade (tho i dunno what they're doing with the arcade games and the bingo), and they're going to build yuppie flats there instead. blinkin typical of the council, really. they're doing much the same thing in the west end of newcastle - pulling down most of elswick and scotswood (not that they didn't need pulling down, but that's not the point!), shifting all the residents to far distant parts of the city and then most likely building yuppie flats. they'll have a great view over the river to the metrocentre

I was planning on going back up there to see some friends next month. I'm not going to recognise the place
And yuppie flats in the middle of Whitley? Anyone who moves in will move straight back out come the first bank holiday Monday

they do choose some odd places to build these yuppie flats don't they? like just up the road from my office, on the utterly benighted stockwell road (one of the less charming parts of sarf london). i mean, who in their right mind would choose to pay a coupla hundred thou for the pleasure of living there

I have a friend who lives just off the Stockwell Road Mind you, I can think of worse places to live: Wallsend or North Shields, for example

i'm sure it's a lovely place to live, honest!
... elswick, scotswood, benwell, byker, pelaw, walker ... and so many more, all full of the local colour and quaint customs that we all love so much, and which make the city such an interesting place to live. i feel all homesick now
i wish i could go drown my sorrows in a
or 10, but unfortunately a big pile of textbooks
are lurking with intent. hope you have a better weekend n me!

Oooh, Byker. Nice Ever been to Battle Hill? That's where I grew up (for a couple of years anyway...)
And textbooks? I remember those... What are you studying? Anything interesting..?

The Spanish City may be dead but there's a new music venue called appropriately "The Dome" , situated guess where, yep, right under the famous S.C. dome.
Had some good bands there as well and I don't mean the miming karoke singers you get nowadays.
Very "Jazz Club" - nice.

How long you two been away? its making me homesick for a place I only lived near for 9 years reading your text, can hear the geordie accent in it, its great.
Best part of whitley is that when you get out of it, it's surrounded by some lovely places, especially if you go north a bit up the A1.

I left Whitley 'part time' (to go to University) in 1993 and then moved away completely in 1996, after living there for 15 years.
You're right about the surrounding area - I seemed to spend a lot of my childhood in the various castles up the coast from Whitley. Amazing scenery

danny: interesting? *sigh* i wish. hrm is not the most fascinating subject in the world.
hobbes: sometime when i have some time (har) i will indeed drop you a line ... once i've got my brain going again, so you may be waiting a while!
magic: been away 10 yrs and counting... i love the northumbrian coast, there are so many great places up there. i keep trying to tell these uneducated southerners how beautiful it all is, but i generally just get laughed at still, i suppose that's better n them all suddenly taking over druridge bay or warkworth or wherever!
