Having gone through this system last year I can say its the fairest system I can think of. Nobody gets into collage because of who they know. They are admitted because of their hard work.

Despite the page being neglected someone has responded!
I only went partway through the system myself, having finally chosen a place in the UK and my only criticism of it is having to make a decision so early on in the process as to which course you prefer. Ideally I think you would be able to make the choice when your exam results came out but that is a little unfair on the universities themselves. You can't wion 'em all.
Thanks for the comment.

TRiG (Ireland) A dog, so bade in office Posted May 7, 2006
A lecturer at my college (Athlone IT, mentioned in the article) says that the system is imperfect in that a person's personal enthusiasm for a particular course does not figure. He thinks that an interview element should be included.
The article fails to mention that some institutions (UL is the only one I know of, but I think there are others) offer extra points for higher level maths.
