Back in my day, it was the old 5 points for an A, 4 for a B sort of thing. Splitting the grades in 3 has just made it more cumbersome and left the student a little more at the mercy of the examiner. But that's an old argument at this stage. I would hope colleges would place a little more emphasis on an applicant's personal qualities and ambitions rather than relying solely on whether the applicant is capable of doing a good leaving cert (which most certainly does not correlate with intelligence).
