Yes...how can you possibly miss that huge, big massive thing on the side of the motorway... The Angel of the North...
Well...I'm not saying what I think of it...I don't think much of it...but it's there nevertheless...not in Newcastle...but near it...

I won't have a word said against the Angel. It's WONDERFUL. And it knows where you live.

Did I say anything???
OK, I suppose I did...
I think it could have been better...perhaps if it had arms...

I didn't like the idea of spending £750,000 on a big sculpture but now I love the idea of having a great big angel that looks like like a plane out of World War One two miles from my house. It's brilliant and I'm glad its there.

It is a very bold statement with an incredible presence.
Standing in the shadow of the massive swaying wings is quite erie...

OK...I won't say another semi-bad word about it...
I suppose it grows on you...
It would have been better if it'd been made out of copper...that way it would have turned green...
The idea of it rusting was good though... I'll admit that...
Very good idea to have it rust so that it changes with time too...

I'm glad you have opinions
Life would be soooo boring if spuds didn't!
If you don't like it, say so, I don't care!!

As long as you don't mind...
I'm not rediculously keen on it...but I don't *hate* it...I just think it could have been better...
I suppose it just wasn't what I was expecting...

It hasn't grown on me yet, but I so rarely see it.. After all I live in Newcastle and its in Gateshead. And as has already been mentioned in the Metro Centre thread they are not the same place.
Sorry to appear pedantic, but its like ... (struggles to find comparison) ... calling someone from the Black County a Brummie I suppose.

I just read the updated article, and I ust say it's good...
...except that I think I was mis-understood...my own fault I suppose...
The Angel, *isn't* going to turn green... I just said it would have been nicer if they'd made it out of copper so that it would...
But it won't...it's made out of iron, and will continue to go all rusty & fall to bits...
Just thought I'd better say that...sorry...it was probably my fault...
The Angel of the North...
Sidney Kidney, AKA Gruby Ben, friend of Dirty Den Posted Apr 14, 2000
It's not 'going rusty', it's Oxidising!!!

OK, OK...if you want to get technical over it then there's a whole hog of electrode potential nonsense going on...and as soon as I get my chemistry notes back then I'll know what it's called...
The Angel of the North...
discopants Posted Apr 15, 2000
That's why they made it out of iron though, isn't it. So it would turn a funny shiny colour when it "oxidises"

Sorry to contradict Eomando again, It's made of steel, not iron. It will not rust and fall to bits as the type of steel, called "core 10" will oxidise on the surface. This oxidisation actually protects the inner metal from the elements. It'll probably fall over before it falls apart!
I always thought oxidisation was just a posh name for rust!

Eomando (it is it is it is 2 years now!!! 8-) ) Posted Sep 10, 2000
Steels just an alloy of iron..but with less carbon in it (i think) so that it's less brittle...
...and rust is the oxidation that occurs with iron..it's not *just* rust...
The Angel of the North...
Sidney Kidney, AKA Gruby Ben, friend of Dirty Den Posted Sep 11, 2000
Ahh, but oxidising metals or it's alloys is not just unique to Iron based metals. Just think of aluminium!

Eomando (it is it is it is 2 years now!!! 8-) ) Posted Sep 12, 2000
I didn't say that it was....only that rust wasn't the only form of oxidation..
