The Fourth Annual h2g2 Academy Awards - The Peta's - 2
Created | Updated Jan 28, 2004
Deadline Extended
With the post being closed the last two weeks and with voting due to
close in the next couple of days , the h2g2 Academy are pleased to announce an extension for the
Petas nomination deadline.
Nominations now close at 12 noon on Monday 9th February, to give me time
to get this into that week's post. Voting arrangements for the short listed candidates will then be
posted so pay attention film fans.
The other Awards
Cold Mountain is heavily fancied for the BAFTAs which were announced on 19th
January. However, the shock was that despite 13 nominations there was a major exclusion from their
list. Last years BAFTA and Oscar winning actress was not included in the shortlist. Will this dent
her appeal to the Oscar voters?
However the Golden Globes announced last Sunday almost shunned Cold
Mountain as well. Out of 8 nominations only Renée Zellweger winning a Globe for Best Supporting
actress. The big winners with the International Journalists, who vote for the Golden Globes, was
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, including Best Film and Director.
Oscar
On Tuesday the Academy Awards were announced. This years films to watch will be Lord of
the Rings: The Return of the King with eleven. nominations and Master and Commander: The
Far Side of the World with ten. However neither of these two feature in the acting categories
meaning that Russell Crowe will not be sitting anxious to add to his one golden statuette this
year.
For direction Peter Jackson is hot favourite having completed the Lord of the Rings Epic
this year in an international field. But is up against Sofia Coppola hoping to emulate her father with
her debut Lost in Translation for which she is also nominated for original screen play.
Other directors to get the nod were Australian Peter Weir for Master and
Commander, Clint Eastwood for Mystic River and Brazilian Fernando Meirelles leading
the unsung nations 2004 challenge for City of God.
Unsung Oscar nations also crop up in the supporting categories actors Puerto Rican Benicio Del
Toro for 21 Grams, Djimon Hounsou of Beninfor In America and Ken Watanabe only
the second ever Japanese nominee for The Last Samurai are joined by Iranian actress
ShohrehAghdashloo for House of Sand and Fog.
As well as Crowe, Nicole Kidman, ex-husband Tom Criuse and Jack Nicholson have been
overlooked in the lead acting categories. However the lists are still impressive.
- Johnny Depp swash buckles his way unto the list for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean:
The Curse of the Black Pearl. - Former winner Sir Ben Kingsley has another outstanding chance with House of Sand and
Fog. - Jude Law is hoping to overcome the cold shoulder of ex-wife Sadie Frost with a win for Cold
Mountain. - Comic genius Bill Murray is hoping it will be his year if Oscar doesn't get to Lost in
Translation. - Also a former 'Mr Madonna' Sean Penn is hoping all the mysticism she evokes might help him in
Mystic River.
The actresses are a mix of experience and youth.
- Thirteen year old Keisha Castle-Hughes breaks the record for this category by sever years
for Whale Rider but is up against. - Veteran Diane Keaton for Something's Gotta Give.
- Charlize Theron for Monster.
- Naomi Watts for 21 Grams.
- And by British hopeful Samantha Morton for In America.
All will be revealed for Bafta on 15th February and Oscar on the
29th. However stay tuned here for the Peta's coming to you exclusive in The Post on
4th March.
