I'll post here the once because I know I'm in the category of 'devious troll' and not popular here . I'd love to know how that will be decided upon..because it will massively affect people's mental health to have that put on them..I mean how does one deal with proving your innocence against something so convoluted?
It will badly affect someone to have a hit squad suddenly descend because you're labelled a 'devious troll'. And the more you try to protest your innocence, the more that will be taken as evidence of guilt. You will be caught up in a Kafkaesque nightmare of hideous proportions.
You will rot at home after you turn off your computer, knowing you are viewed with utter contempt as a 'poor me' that won't face the fact you are a devious troll..and you are a piece of crp.

To my eye trolls can be very different
Just like people driving under influence. If your alcohol level is above X you have been DUI
But the levels above X vary and their may even be mitigating circumstances and you may or may not have been driving under influence before and...and...and
So you see, your question is not easily answered fkf

I confess I find the idea of teasing trolls worrying. It could turn into mobbing all too easily.

Concur Mrs Zee. Who judges the judges?
I suprisedno one has mentioned sock puppets? A good sock puppet is a devious and manipulative weapon. It encourages group following for the master's agenda.
A troll on the other hand is easily identifiable, you have the choice to feed it or not

Ok perhaps the idea of flying squad would lead to cliques etc
But it's good to discuss different strategies that as individuals we could deal with incidents of trolling as well as how we would like the moderation system work
Call a comment
Pointedly ignore
Join in a conversation to keep it on track, well, as on track as a thread can be on hootoo
Go to someones PS and offer or to someone else who is upset by something that has gone on a thread
If someone is 'trolling' across threads, or targeting a person make your concerns known to the community/mod team via a private email?
That sort of thing...
If we have a pro-active, firm but fair mod team and a community that is prepared to not to tolerate certain behaviours but at the same time be tolerant and forgiving (when necessary), then we won't go wrong
My thoughts anyway

Ivan has asked me to post here on his behalf as w*rk and health issues are taking all of his time today and are likely to do the same tomorrow. He’s sorry for starting the discussion and then not being around to see where it goes, but RL rules at the moment.
He’s glad that the discussion is a wide-ranging one. That’s all part of the fun of workshopping, apparently. All thoughts on how to deal with trolls and trolling are welcome. His personal opinion is that hati’s suggestion is a good one, as he’s said, but that it won’t necesssarily cover all possibilities. If there is to be a group approach to defusing trolls in the manner hati put forward, Ivan does not see this as being a ‘formal’ arrangement. No badges, no elite group, no formal agenda – just people watching out for each other, really.
Ivan will be back just as soon as he can manage it, which is when he’ll catch up with other people’s ideas.

I prefer the PS support thingy + Peanut. Not all are as strong a characters as some Not all have the skin of a Rhinocerous
Purile point scoring on the more public threads, is merely amusing to me thus I merely become indifferent toward them. The pursuit via and PS has been noted in the past, the perpetrators are banned - permanantly (supposedly) It's a tough call for the Mods, Eds and ACE's, I wouldn't want their job

one question please ?
unlike the Beeb that can ban a troll etc. But let them back after a spell in the "sin bin" (time and time again). Will/Can the "new" hootoo kick them out permanently ? and NO comeback in

Lifetime bans will be in the armoury.
And there are people the bbc banned permanently who remain banned.

Here's another thought; a no questions asked right to yikes a post or a thread on your PS and have it removed, just because it's your space and you don't want it there.
What do people think of this?
The Human:Troll ratio, and other reasons why I might not stay with hootoo.
Don't like it. People do all sorts of things in haste and later live to regret it. If I put time and energy into a post, or a conversation, as long as it don't break the HRs it should stay. If someone wants me to stop posting on their PS they can ask, and if I don't they can email the CEs.
I think thread removal should be way up the ladder of interventions unless it grossly breaks the HRs.

"a no questions asked right to yikes a post or a thread on your PS and have it removed, just because it's your space and you don't want it there."
That would have dealt with my stalker perfectly (except for the spillage into RL, which law enforcement was prepared to deal with). If you have repeatedly asked someone to leave you alone, and they won't, it's very frustrating.
Now even I have occasionally posted, in good faith and with no harmful intent, a message to someone's PS and had it either completely ignored or had them respond to the effect that they don't wish to speak with me. I've been able to leave it be, because I am just here to have fun, and when I have posted to someone's PS it's always been to either introduce myself, or because something they've said in a thread has caught my attention but I don't want to be off-topic. Not everyone seems capable of that level of courtesy. I've seen people posting in other's PS, and when asked to go away, state outright that they refuse to go anywhere or leave it alone.
I hate the idea of "I don't like this person, please remove their posts", but that's been going on here for years already, people yikesing posts because they don't like the poster(s), getting their friends to yikes the same posts, etc. I don't think implementing something like this would exacerbate that too much. But I don't think those should necessarily count towards any formal transgressions procedure, as a lot of those requests would be because some people just don't/can't get along.
Also I must agree with Bel that I hate that Barlesque displays journal entries right on the front page. But not unsubbing as of yet.

"I think thread removal should be way up the ladder of interventions unless it grossly breaks the HRs."
Of course, I agree with this, too.
Perhaps a happy medium- not a uniltaeral, "No questions asked" policy, but an allowance for people to appeal to the CEs or whoever, and have their problem taken seriously?
Also, I really don't think it matters what a person's reason is for being disruptive, if that's the overall effect. But I think someone who flares up once after a long history of playing nice deserves to be dealt with differently from a repeat offender or a genuine troll. Is there a better kind of "time out" or "cooling off" period than just pre-mod, no matter how temporary?

42 minutes later he added this:
I have said it before and will repeat now that teasing is neither a good nor an acceptable way to deal with trolls. Talk to them, explain what is wrong with their behaviour/why they should stop, then ignore them and if that doesn't help follow them around and warn other hitchhikers about them until they finally give in and stop - or are banned for a shorter or longer period and finally for good
If you still don't know what a troll is read the thread Hatri mentioned. If you can't understand it after reading that I can't help you
After reading your concerns regarding a flying troll swatting squad I have decided not to join an organized one but to act as a free lance
Key: Complain about this post
