H2G2 is going up the toilet.
Elentari Posted Nov 3, 2005
There was some on WJH, and I think there was some on Boring and Banal too. I'm not sure about others. Mostly in Ask and MiscChat, I think.

I believe that the the latest tirade of insults was in the 'What Just Happened' thread in <./>miscchat</.>
But to be honest it would take ages to catch up on the Blog. I haven't bothered as I have been given the gist of it.

This is the correct response, and I am delighted (although not surprised) to find it here in your journal. Let's all be positive about the Guide. A wise man once told me - in a very different context, to be sure, but it applies to h2g2, as well - that the secret to success is to take the good and build on it while ignoring the nonsense.
The way to keep the Guide alive and thriving is to contribute to it. The trinity of EG, UG and Post all need thoughtful, well-written submissions. If we take the time and energy we're wasting on arguments and sheer foolishness and channel that into writing, I think we'd accomplish a lot. And set an example for newbies about what the Guide is capable of providing.
Apparently Lord Wolfden floods conversations with personal remarks that completely derail the conversations. Look at his journals for examples of the detailed, blow by blow accounts he gives of his personal life. The response was to bait him, accuse him of spamming (which I'm not sure actually fits) and to chat about him ofsite. So we have LW baiters and haters, which has turned out to be as unfortunate as his actions.

Phred, I don't know of a specific link either. Some of it's on the aceforum, and I can't link to that As a summary, there's a guy named Wolfden who a lot of people find annoying (with some reason, I must admit). They went after Wolfden pretty hard. Almost obsessively, trying to get him to leave, or perhaps make him suffer? Something like that. And this is taken as a symptom that h2g2 is going down the toilet.
Some folks think that LW can be helped, which is admirable, I think. May not be effective, but it's better than forming threads to bash him.
Honestly, this is all getting boring and silly. I've lost interest in it.
Hyp, thanks
I reckon it's all an issue of personal responsibility. I'm going to try to be a responsible hootooer by contributing, discussing and not letting the crap get to me

Demon Drawer Posted Nov 3, 2005
Jodan I did not go after Wolfden. The above post can be misconstrued to lead to my thread on the ACEs home page. So I wish to be disassociated from that particular comment.
I was upset with the heavy handed approach of some of the ACEs, which has lead to the unfortunate decision of one of my longest surviving frinds on here to hitch off this place, wheter rightly or wrongly.
I have only hovered in the areas that LW occupies but have rarely posted and never been dragged into bashing, foprming thread or arguing with him in any way, either as a one off or obsessively.
Indeed the only thread I have posted myself on this whole subject was one pointing out issues with the ACEs and their code of conduct whaich IMHO has added fuel to the flames in some instances rather than helped to smother them.

J Posted Nov 3, 2005
Yes, no, I'm talking about the offsite Aceforum posts, DD Nothing to do with you.
I reckon the ACEs should spend more time welcoming newbies and less time trying to intervene in problems. Initially, the ACEs *were* supposed to be the friendly, helpful people onsite, but that position has changed, by italic decree. That's fine. Being good at copying and paste-ing and answering questions and being friendly don't always go hand in hand

I know that was the reason I handed in my badge.

J Posted Nov 3, 2005
Well, I don't happen to think that a group of people with orange badges will be any more effective at mediating, arbitrating or being friendly than the rest of us, but agree to disagree, eh?

Reefgirl, any comments I made, I made directly to you personally, not behind your back.
I have very little contact with you but in those few threads I have bumped into you, I have seen repeated comments about how fed up you are being dumped on with The Post.
As The Post is an official part of h2g2 that is sanctioned by the Italics, then I suggest you email them directly and hand in your notice stating how you feel - if that is what you want to do.
Then they can arrange for a temporary editor whilst they select a permanant one.
If you are just letting off steam then fair enough, but you have to realise that, as other official volunteers, you are a representative of the role and whinging about it reflects badly on the site and yourself.
This is not a personal attack - I would give the same advice (and have done) to anyone in a volunteer position on the site.

Personally, I think needs some strong leadership. Whoever's willing to provide that, be it you (Reef), EMR, Skanky, whoever... well, it needs to happen.
I agree with Mort that you're representing The Post, and the top job held for years by Shazz. If you don't want that, then you have an obligation to step aside, but if you do want to, you have an obligation to step forward and rise to meet the challenge

Reefgirl (Brunel Baby) Posted Nov 3, 2005
I know your comments were directed at me Mort and I was not endorced by the italics nor even asked by them to keep the Post going whilst Shazz was away. Awix and myself thought the Post needed to be kept going so we stepped in while Shazz recouperated, then Awix elvised and that left me and a misguided sense of community to try and make the best of it. I had a months experience of working in the Post when we took over and NO experience of doing the front page when Awix elvised, I had to learn the hard way and the only help I got was from Titania, I hav given h up precious spare time to keep the Post going because I though maybe somewhere out there someone appreciated what I was doing, maybe the do but they have been ominiously quiet. Yes I have got a cracking team together to work at the post and I certainly appreciate them for what they do. But what people don't realise it the amount of time it takes out, I've had to put a lot of things on hold for this because I wanted to keep it going for the sake of the readers and the writers and I still do but I can't face the Sh!t anymore. I little appreciation for what we do is all I ever wanted.
I'm sorry if I ranted but this has been weighing me down for a long long time.
I really have had enough now

Reefgirl, I for one complimented you on the job you were doing with the Post. And I'm sure other people must have as well. I'm sorry you are unhappy right now. But you have been giving off negative vibes for a long time now. It's only natural that some of it would bounce back.
But..............I refuse to let other people's negativity spoil my enjoyment of h2g2. Jodan began this journal entry with a positive attitude and that is what I am going to take away from it.
I like h2g2. I have wonderful friends here who have helped me through a difficult time in my life. The h2g2 community is important to me for that reason. And I enjoy the articles in the Guide and look forward to contributing more of them myself. This aftenoon I sat down and started making a list of topics I would like to turn into Guide entries. I also like the Post and am a regular reader as well as a contributor. And the AWW gives me a venue for my fiction.
This is a great site, folks. It is so not dying. These recent blips on the radar have been blown all out of proportion. Let's move on now.

And I for one thank you for your compliments
And as for the negative vibes, when you get dumped on from a great hight it's going to leak out somewhere

Meh. Thinking of someone who got here first as more senior or different in any way doesn't work for me
Sometimes I find newbies the most interesting - they're usually more unfiltered.
H2G2 is going up the toilet.
J Posted Nov 4, 2005
Unfiltered, yeah. Less cautious about the truth.
I worry more about the future newbies we lose now than the few we lost yesterday.

Good job on the positive message Jodan
I have been inspired by this thread to aid the life of h2g2 by writing another of my sproadically produced entries for putting in PR shortly
Pimms Tortoise (so called because I rarely poke my head out nowadays )
... I have heard of LW, having been in a few PR threads he was posting to, but have missed out on the recent flak. I'm myopically pleased it has been happening somewhere else that I have no interest in being involved with personally, though sorry that nice people have been soured by it
Key: Complain about this post
