h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Today I was in the local supermarket when a little old lady at the next checkout didn't have enough money to pay for her shopping so the man behind her paid the bill for her.

The cashier said he'd restored her faith in humanity and mine too.

We have two extra bods here this xmas that we werent banking on, my daughters gay friend who has been kicked out of his home so we have taken him in as i would rather here with a close family other than being in a shelter home, he will now move in with us for a while

The other is an old lady who lives across the road, her son died 2 months ago and she has no one else to look after her, so she will also move in just for a couple of days to have company, she is 78 years old and lonely.

It was the very least we could do for both of them, so this xmas they will have a family and a good time

Those are both nice examples of what Christmas should mean. They have brightened my day.

To be honest, I am having a hard time coping with the holidays this year. Thanks for sharing this.

Somebody asked me about 20 minutes ago what are you wanting for xmas, now this will sound really corny but true...... i answered "i already have my xmas present, life"...............

And he, thats right he, burst into tears that brought a tear to my eye also.....................

Blimey, that was emotional

Just thought i would share that with you

nowt wrong with a tear or two for happiness

its like what happend to me today, to get to the shops from where I live its a mile walk up a hill, well I can do it easy im only 16, but today on the way back I saw an old man about 70 trying to climb this very steep hill, so I stoped and helped him up and also paid for him to have a coffie, and to gave him some change for the bus back, it took half an hour out of my day but I think that it was worth it.

I can't find the quote, unfortunately, but Thich Nhat Hanh was talking about miracles. Paraphrased, he said that people think walking on water or flying through the air would be a miracle. But the real miracle is walking on the earth and knowing that we are connected to it and to all of life.

The true meaning of christmas is getting every single person in your extended family, neighbours, and one memorable year, a travelling tinker and his dog named Barney and his horse Patrick I think,to a huge family meal. Then play a hyper competative game of monoply.

this is a bit like that cult, you know the one started up by Danny wallace, every friday they all do an random act of kindness to a stranger, but when I say cult, I dont mean going round in orange

I think it's lovely. Cultish or not.

We often are overwhelmed when we think about all of the problems in the world - none of which we can solve. But we can make a difference to the people we actually come into contact with each day.

I think showing true Christmas spirit is wonderful. I wish it would continue all year. People aren't just lonely or hungry or suffering in some other way at Christmas.

You guys are all great.

There is only one thing that I have found to ever beat the christmas spirit. When the Special Olympics were held in Ireland, that was something really, really wonderful. I volunteered and ... it was... you know unbelievable. You could touch the good spirit every where.
Even the Dublin Caddies were in a nice mood. Got left off a fare by one.
