Gnomon - time to move on

Then 'White People' is not a good translation of Caucasians. To me, Hispanics look very much like Southern Europeans, Spanish Portuguese Italians and Greeks. These are all considered to be "White People" in Europe.

I've written an entry on the French Pyrenees and have submitted it to Peer Review.

"Caucasian- Of or being a major human racial classification traditionally distinguished by physical characteristics such as very light to brown skin pigmentation and straight to wavy or curly hair, and including peoples indigenous to Europe, northern Africa, western Asia, and India. "

Traditionally, it's 'white people' in America.

Hate to disagree chaps, but I consider the terms 'Caucasian' and 'Hispanic' to be perfectly nromally words to use- and I wouldn't call a Hispanic Caucasion... I'd include them in 'European', and as a sub set of 'white'.

Thanks Gnomon - I've started another thread over at the Members' Bar (A1337546) with details of works in progess on it.

I've also added the latest additions for members' specialist knowledge.

Incidentally, any feedback on the MB page or any new specialisms will be more than welcome smiley - smiley

The US Census Bureau considers Hispanics to be a subset. And there are many subsets within the Hispanic classifiation. Difficulty arises from so much mixed ancestry in the US. But, my friend Jodan, Hispanics are white, brown, black and everything in between. It's an unfortunate catch-all classification.

Hi H. I took these stats directly from an Ohio census thingy (If I remember correctly) so I don't think you'll mind if I leave them in? smiley - grovel

Not at all. Just trying to explain that Hispanic means different things to different people - and includes a wide variety of ethnic groups. We have some Mexican-American friends who insist we refer to them as Chicanos, rather than Hispanics, because they say that Hispanic is a meaningless and degrading catch-all. Their opinion, not mine.

Well, I don't really mind - I mean, at least we're talking Geography here... smiley - smiley

But now you mention it, perhaps transferring the debate to the Members' Bar might be in order? It's a good general point, and worthy of discussion...

Or there's always the Writing Workshop thread - F57153?thread=314718

Fancy doing a little more enabling? I just went back through and made a note of various points, so, just to sum up the thread so far...

smiley - tomato The Members Bar is over at A1337546. If you've got a work in progress, or haven't yet added your smiley - 2cents to the members specialist knowledge thread, or just fancy a general chat, you might fancy popping over and posting or subscribing to the threads.

smiley - tomato What sort of logo or badge would we like? Anyone got any bright ideas?

smiley - tomato Things for me to do - add How to Be a Tourist (A619391) to the Map Room as advice for those who wish to participate in field research... also add A Broad Called Ben's excellent Heathrow entry to the Links Page

smiley - tomato Any further suggestions for the Links Page?

smiley - tomato Or ways of improving the Map Room? Ways of expanding it to different kinds of geographical entries? If anyone feels like writing a new page on any subject, I'd be happy to link to it smiley - smiley

smiley - tomato Also, I did say I'd try and link to some of the entries on the Links Page as part of the text in the Map Room.

I know this is a bit late, but I’ve been working…
In North America, Caucasians are often associated with people of direct Anglo-Saxon descent, where Hispanic in the USA is associated with people of Latin descent, specifically those in Mexico and South/Central America who ancestry is often mixed with the native people of the area, creating a distinctive appearance which often has a darker coloured skin and black hair apposed to the blond and light brown of northern Europe.
- personal observation of American Culture. Not accual fact.

It would be interested to see the exact definition. Any sociology students?

Right - to paraphrase Paul Weller, I'm going overground. The Royal h2g2 Geographical Entry Society is now officially recruiting and open for business, and if anyone feels like advertising its existence around the community... well, that'd be nice smiley - smiley
