There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

::AHEM:: As far as stealing names goes, may I remind you both that The Royal h2g2 Procrastinators Society A431911 has been going for some time, and that we can properly call ourselves 'Royal' because we have a *real* Royal Warrant smiley - nahnah

Futhermore, sign me up for this one smiley - ok I'll nip over and check it out after posting this smiley - biggrin

i would think that even by that definition that history would be integral to geography due to the fact that every place that exists is a direct result of the history that brought it into being in the first place smiley - winkeye a geographical entry without history would seem kind of lopsided.

but of course there's loads of history that has no impact on geography whatsoever. i'll try to make it over to the historians page later today, i'm still trying to figure out what kind of contribution i could make smiley - ok

six, probably not one of my better efforts, but unique all the same is the entry on Bald Knob, USA which is now pending. it covers several geographical aspects all at once: A1152929. if you think you have a place for it on the links page, feel free smiley - smiley (and i won't be offended if you don't!)

I'm not too worried about being officially Royal... I'm as patriotic as the next bloke, but only if he happens to be Tony Benn.

I've added Bald Knob to the list of examples, although maybe Chattanooga might be a better example.

We must be able to improve on the Map Room and the Links Page - anyone got any ideas? I'd like to be able to overground and launch this thing properly in the not-too-distant future.

Kerr_Avon - hunting stray apostrophes and gutting poorly parsed sentences

One idea that's just occurred to me is we could ask all the members to list any areas they have particular interest/knowledge of- like I know a fair amount about Derbyshire, Jimi knows about Pensylvania and so forth- that way people planning on writing entries about a given place could see if there's anyone that may be able to give them help and information on the subject.

Just a thought...

I really like to see the little details of a place. Most articles and guide books can tell you all the general things you require to visit a place, but very few give us a little detail that makes it personal.

Example: Most guidebooks would say that Victoria, BC, Canada is well known for its gardens. Not many would tell you that a short drive from town is a garden that was created by a coal Barron and required 100 Chinese slaves at any time to maintain in it’s hay day. It also boasts free addition, where as many of the gardens in Victoria require an entrance fee ranging from CAD $5 - $20

Jordan, your definition for geography, "The study of the earth and its features and of the distribution of life on the earth, including human life and the effects of human activity.’ Wouldn’t that include the ‘why’ of geography? I agree with you that Geography is not History, however I think the two rely on each other to explain the why. For example (and I do love examples); The type of landscape and quality of the conditions of the landscape to provide food/transportation etc… effects the history of the inhabitants in that location, and the history of a place effects how the current geography has come about.

I think that it is great how these two societies are closely linked from the beginning. And they have such great members.

Ebert – how about a logo we can put on our personal sites in H2G2 so we can proudly say we belong to ‘The Royal h2g2 Geographical Entry Society’

oh, and on the bald knob/chattanooga bit, you don't *have* to use either if you don't want, it was just an offer smiley - smiley. i thought the bald knob entry would be good for containing several types of geography in a single entry, but on second thought maybe that's not something we should encourage. it's quite possible i shouldn't have tried it to begin with, but it worked out in the end smiley - ok

feel free to do as you wish, of course. i have an 8-year-old... i'm used to being ignored smiley - tongueout

How about adding this article on How to Be a Tourist A619391 to the map room as advice for those who wish to participate in field research.

Please don’t tell me we’ve stalled.

I was thinking about writing an article on various Airports. I live in Victoria, BC Canada at the moment and I know the airports here quite well. I was wondering if anyone would like to join up with me and write about your local airport. I’m thinking about focusing on the harbour airport.

Did you know that the inner harbour in Victoria is classified as an international airport due the fact that there are scheduled flights between here and Seattle? (As apposed to charter flights.) They use floatplanes called Beavers. A few years ago an Orca (better know as a killer whale) swam into the harbour, making it dangerous for the planes to take off or land.
Conclusion: Victoria inner harbour is the only international airport to have been closed due to a whale on the runway.

i'll be visiting my local airport at the end of the month, i should have time to do a bit of research. but i'm not quite sure what kind of information would go into such an entry aside from location, recommended travel procedures (which i would assume to be pretty standard), maybe a list of airlines that access that area - altho those would be apt to change.

if you can give me an idea of what to look for i can help smiley - smiley

brolean, I live a block from Route 66. smiley - smiley I think friendlywithteeth is reading human geography at university. When he gets settled in and back on line, you might invite him to join your society.

And I agree that it is often difficult to separate geography and history. They go together like bread and butter. The history of the area where I live in is highly influenced by it's geography.(mining area) Most of the cities wouldn't exist otherwise. Which is the same for major cities around the world. They are located where they are for a geographical reason.

I once had a history professor who began each semester by telling his classes that it was impossible to understand the whys of history without a firm understanding of both geography and anthropology and that none of the three disciplines could stand independently. So who is going to found the Royal Anthropological Society?

And I congratulate you, Number Six, and you, Jodan, for finding ways to improve the EG. smiley - applause

MTRF, Hypatia - welcome, you're in...

Airports - an excellent idea. Do an h2g2 search for 'Heathrow' and another one for 'Birmingham New Street' (which is a railway station, but hey - the principle's much the same) and you'll find two rather fine examples of this kind of entry. In fact, I must ask A Broad Call Ben and Z to join us.

I'm going to be a bit busy with moving house over the next week, but after that I should be right back into it. What I'd like to do is try and get the place looking good enough so we can go overground and start actively inviting people to look in.

So I was thinking, we probably need another page - a sort of club room, although I'm sure someone can come up with a better and cooler name than that. So we can list all our specialisations there, and that can be the place for us the members to have discussions.

I also agree that the Map Room at the moment focuses on a certain kind of geographical entry, and we should add proabably other sub-pages about the other options available, but maybe we can do this as we go along.
