There is a place called Henry's in Brum city centre that would be suitable I reckon. It's just off Victoria square near the Floozie in the Jakuzi and New Street Station. It is usually pretty quiet on a Saturday daytime and early evening and is reasonably large. It's not really *cheap* but it's not massively expensive either (unlike Brindley place).
It does cocktails too for those who like such things.
Just a sugestion. Really cheap places like the Briar Rose (a Wetherspoons) are nearby also

Wahey, I might actually make it to a meet. I bet itll get arranged at a time when I've run out of money though, thats my luck...

However really cheap can often equate to 'rough'.
Also, can somebody who understands the game of kicking a pigs bladder around scan the fixtures and avail us of them so we can plan this so that the pub isn;t full of footie fans getting lagered, and also so there isn;t a local match on (specially after all the fun the other weekend when the some local team was playing some other local team). Nothing like watching grown men battering each other. Not.
Near to new street is good.
Is this officially a vague plan yet? We have a vague location, and a vague date, even a definite day of the week, and we know what the planned events will be (drinking).

Near the station seems to be a good idea, victoria is easy to get to (even *I* know where it is, and I've been living here for a month!). Sorry, is this making it less vague?

As long as its near to a station I can get to Bristol from thats ok, But Ill have to check Brum train times, last time I was up there to see a gig at the Academy I missed the last (11:30) train home and got stranded.

I can fit one, possibly two people on my floor (if I tidy really, really well) for emergencies, but it is a three-quarter of an hour walk (though there are public transport links, but I can never remember when they stop running).

BobTheFarmer Posted Oct 30, 2002
3/4 hour walk back from the pub, thats nothing...
Is that an offer VIP?

Hang on, s**t, I don't even know if I'm coming yet, as I'll technically be at home in Oxford (I'm in Brum for uni)... if I'm there yes, but don;t count on it. Sorry, shouldn't have emtioned it, really.

Orcus Posted Oct 30, 2002
I wouldn't worry about footie fans in either of the pubs I mentioned. In fact I've never heard of trouble in Brum centre ever, or at least in my time.

Orcus Posted Oct 30, 2002
Oh and I personally wouldn't go to the Briar Rose for something like this, it is a bit of a scumpit when it wants to be.
That's what you get if you charge £1.50 a pint these days I guess

The Figure of Eight is that? That pub smells
The pub I was referring to is called Henry's and is near Victoria Square. If there's a pub calle the Victoria in Brum then I've never heard of it.

Z Posted Oct 30, 2002
After a quick look on railtrack.co.uk it's at twenty to ten in the evening. There must be a later one meethinks...try www.thetrainline.com when you get in from work.
Yes I did mean the figure of 8 and it did smell to me.
I take it people would want a pub that did good food...any of the whetherspoons that don't smell seem good Would we have to make an advanced booking do you think?

IctoanAWEWawi Posted Oct 30, 2002
Hmm, just had a check meself and it reckons 10 to 9 in the evening!
Mind you, the times at the moment are all affected by the weekend engineering works so I guess it depends on when we have this.
You could try phoning as I have had some very odd times out of the railtrack, trainline and virgintrains sites recently.

hmmm, there had better be a late train, I cant be a**ed to go up for a non whole evening...
When?
IctoanAWEWawi Posted Oct 30, 2002
Believe me, there are *always8 late trains at new street.
In fact, if there is a storm that weekend, you could probably turn up at midnight and catch the 3pm train

Well there wasnt when I went to see System of a down at the Academy, and I missed the 11:30 train back, meaning I had to get a train to Worcester, wake up my bro-in-law to pick me up and take me to their posh commuter village house, get the bus into Worcester in the morning, and then get the train back to Brum to go back down to Bristol again, as there was nothing from Worcester without more than 5 changes of stop...
Bloddy trains

Yeah. I'm going to the Oxford meet this weekend, and I either have to catch the quater to tem train back home (like hell) or sit in the station until about six o'clock the following morning. Which is what I'm doing. Not by myself, of course, but still.
