Fine, I don't think we need to.
Jodan is used to show that I'm a miner Some people (myself included) think looks like a miner. The main point is to show that I'm not GTB on this account

Hi guys
Just a note to say that we go under the umbrella of 'the h2g2 Post team' and rarely use the word 'editor' except at the Post Office page and in the aforementioned A933897 item. We are lucky, of course, to have our own Post smiley now, which means we can sign of with our own name and . Even the 'ME' in my name was never expanded upon, just added to the 'PR' (Post Reporter) tag which we all decided upon in our early days.
Having said this, I can't really see a major problem with styling yourselves as UG editors - you don't 'slope' and you (now) make it clear that you are running UG.

Now all we need is an italic to join in.
Hi shazz!
I got out the old Roget's in an attempt to find an alternative to 'editor'. My favorite (at 494.7) is smellfungus. Reviewer is suggested as is faultfinder and copy chief.

I wouldn't be entirely unhappy with 'UnderGuide Staff'. It doesn't imply we get paid, does it? (I wouldn't be entirely unhappy getting paid )
'UnderGuide Team' I like less, because I consider the Miners and Polishers part of the team as well. 'UnderGuide Managers'?

UnderGuide Managers is just as misleading as Editors to me.
I sent an email to the group about this by the way. I send a lot of emails

Miner-in-Chief?

GTBacchus Posted Jul 8, 2003
At the FFFF I think I'm called a 'chairman' or something... 'Miner-in-Chief' could have merit... 'Head Miners'?

But... we aren't head miner or miner in chief. We're not even technically miners. And we don't want to place unequal importance to the miners as opposed to the polishers

Perhaps this discussion could be taken elsewhere now? We'd quite like our thread back and I'm sure you'd rather have all the UG-related thread where you can find them easily.

Personally, I like the UG-Managers name better than the UG-Editors. If you really want to use editors, I rather like trying to make it something all one word, like ugeditors or whatnot. Or, if you want to be especially cool, since you have miners and gem polishers, what about some kind of Tolkien-esque creature that lives in the mines and guards the gems?
You've said that only newbies would confuse "Underguide Editors" with something Italic without the Italics, but
a) my guess would be that quite a good chunk of the people who will be submitting to the UG will be newbies. it's a high percentage in PR, and there's every reason to believe it may be an even higher percentage in the UG.
b) in posts and entries, y'all have more than a few times shorthanded the name from "UG-Editors" to "Editors" -- while I was able to tell that it was a shorthanded expression, I did have to re-read a few times to make sure I was understanding it correctly. If the name was something a little different, that would be less likely to be a potential issue.
And Jodan, your current user name is not standing you in especially good stead if you're really trying to convince people that you're not out to tear down Peer Review. If you're peeved with me, feel free to stop by personal space and let me know. But stomping around with a user name like that can only inflame people's feelings about the UG issue, which I really don't think is worth it -- it is quite a worthwhile project, after all.

Amy- Just one more post? *looks hopefully?*
Mikey- I'm angry at PR for a number of reasons, and certainly not you. It's a few reasons I don't care to get into.
To respect this thread, I'll unsubscribe. Any further queries can be asked anywhere that might get my attention

Oh dang, has Jodan unsubscribed before I even had a chance to get back here? I was detained by social obligations last night and never did get back online.
Thanks Jodan & Bacchus for coming here and willingly discussing the matter. I feel as if my circle of acquaintance is beneficially the broader for that, and I feel confident that they have the best interests of Hootoo in mind.
Perhaps I need not feel so depressed about the acrimony I've encountered: perhaps the angry ones remain marginal because, once other researchers perceive their persistently aggressive or intolerant speech habits, the angry ones simply lose adherents to their cause.

The marginals never quite go away, do they? If a person went to any other website and found that it didn't offer what they wanted, they'd leave. But here, they stay. Is it just that h2g2 is very sticky or does it give the impression of being vulnerable to hostile takeovers?

GTBacchus Posted Jul 8, 2003
Amy, hi.
Isn't it kind of like, "I criticize my country because I am patriotic, not because I am not patriotic"?
I mean, 'hostile takeover', really? Most of the people whom I've seen work to improve h2g2 by trying to make some change in how it's run do so because they really love this website and its energy. They see the potential here for what they think of as an ideal online community. That love, I would suggest, is why they don't just go away.
Maybe that's was a shade too rosy to be 100% accurate. Some people really do seem to have chips on their shoulders, but isn't that true everywhere? All in all, I'd say stickiness, rather than vulnerability, is what keeps the 'marginals' around.
Sorry if I'm crashing someone's thread here; I just felt compelled to respond to your comment, Amy.

I do hope you're right, GTB.
I hate to disappoint you but you're not remotely marginal from where I'm sitting.
